Mini Aceman JCW – Big Personality in a Compact, Electric Package

Somewhere between the classic Mini hatch and the Countryman sits a new breed: the Mini Aceman. But this isn’t just any Aceman, this is the John Cooper Works (JCW) edition, meaning it wears its performance pedigree on its sleeve. It’s electric, expressive, and unapologetically firm-riding. And if you’re wondering whether this new JCW still captures that go-kart feel Mini fans crave, the answer is a resounding yes – albeit with a few caveats.

To bring you up to speed, the Aceman JCW is an all-electric performance crossover. It sits between the Mini hatch and the larger Countryman in size, but this is no piggy in the middle, as with a low centre of gravity and instant electric torque, it’s quick off the line and corners like it’s on rails. What’s more it features a dedicated 10-second “Boost” paddle, multiple drive modes, and Mini’s latest infotainment system. Being a JCW you can expect a firm ride, especially on 19-inch wheels, this EV cross prioritises driver engagement over plush comfort, yet comes with some quirky features like a selfie camera and a smile prompt keep the cabin playful.

Visually, the Aceman JCW takes all of Mini’s bold design cues and dials them up. The stance is compact but muscular, with signature JCW red detailing, sporty flourishes, and large 19-inch wheels that really fill the arches. At a glance, it screams “fun,” and thankfully, it delivers just that. Its form also follows function. The short overhangs and squat proportions hint at its handling prowess, and the JCW-specific badging ensures no one mistakes this for a regular Aceman.

Step inside and you’re greeted by a JCW-themed cabin that feels both futuristic and familiar. Red contrast stitching, sporty seats, and an oval-themed dashboard keep things distinctly Mini. There’s a heads-up display and a round OLED infotainment screen that looks like it beamed in from an iPhone concept lab.

However, comfort takes a slight back seat, quite literally. Ride quality at low speeds is firm, almost jarring over broken surfaces. It’s not unbearable, but you do feel every imperfection in the road, a trade-off for the performance chassis I guess.

Practicality-wise, it’s roomy enough for a compact crossover, and while it’s no cavern, four adults should fit comfortably for city journeys. A highlight? The digital assistant will prompt you to smile for the built-in selfie camera, a gimmick, yes, but a very Mini one – just like Spike the dog (that’s its name, not a request).

The tech suite is as whimsical as it is functional. The OLED infotainment screen is a command hub for everything from drive modes to ambient themes like “Vivid,” “Green,” and of course, “Go-Kart,” complete with a yahoo. The navigation is clear, though some features require a bit of menu digging, especially for EV-specific data like efficiency stats. One small frustration, some information like km per kWh isn’t immediately obvious, though you can eventually find it. And yes, there’s even a “Timeless” mode for those craving a more laid-back aesthetic.

The 10-second “Boost” paddle on the steering wheel adds extra power on demand, think of it as an overtake button or in my case, just an invitation to grin foolishly on a twisty road.

Range is a bit of an issue, especially if you’re driving like a $$$$. With its 190 kW / 350 Nm capability, the 49.2kWh (Net) battery will provide nowhere near the published 350km, more like 300ish km, but in fairness, they are a thrilling 300km.

Despite being all-electric, this JCW variant retains a visceral edge. Stab the accelerator and the instant torque shoves you forward with real intent. That low centre of gravity from the battery pack pays dividends in corners, and the car feels planted, eager even, when pushed. But to be perfectly honest, there’s probably a bit too much power for this front-wheel rascal and it WILL spin its wheels, so be prepared to replace them – often.

It’s not the smoothest EV out there either, particularly over bumpy roads where it can feel unsettled. But that’s part of the JCW DNA. It’s meant to be a driver’s car, not a luxury cruiser. And as such, it does its job very well.

On a city road or tight country lane, the Aceman JCW is nothing short of grin-inducing. The steering is sharp, nicely weighted, and offers more feedback than many of its rivals. Cornering grip is excellent, and it’ll even surprise you with how well it digs in when the road tightens up.

But, and it’s a notable but, as I said you do pay for this dynamism with a choppy ride. Even at 50 km/h, the Aceman JCW can feel jittery over average surfaces. Potholes become personal, and go-kart mode is best left off for rougher backroads unless you like a little chiropractic involvement with your commute.

Yet it’s this very immediacy and engagement that sets the JCW apart. You can forgive it its harshness because it’s such a laugh to drive. It’s alive in a way many EVs are not.

The Mini Aceman JCW is not for everyone, but that’s precisely the point. It’s a niche offering with personality to burn. If you value a plush ride and serene cabin, look elsewhere. But if you want a stylish, city-savvy EV that handles like a hot hatch, makes you grin on twisty roads, and occasionally asks you to smile for a selfie? This one’s for you. It’s not perfect — but in true Mini fashion, it doesn’t need to be. It just needs to be fun. And it absolutely is.
