It’s coming up to your first track day, you’ve been playing way too much Gran Turismo to prep and envisioning the track in your head. And then on the actual day, you’ll drink way too much water and pee too much.
That is essentially what the build up to my first track day looked like but it’s not what your first track day is going look like because I used myself as a test subject for your benefit!
1- Don’t Be Nervous
Honestly, that is the key to making the most of many things but not being nervous is even more important on track. You’ll be doing high speeds and taking challenging turns on the track and you’ll need all your wits about you while you are going round the track. There’ll be plenty of other newbies there so just relax, it’s meant to be a fun day out. I was really nervous at first but as soon as I got behind the wheel of a car, I was in my natural element! If you’re a confident driver then good for you but if you’re not then don’t sweat! The instructors/race drivers are super friendly and they are more than willing to give helpful advice.
2- Listen to the Instructor and Be Safe
Doing high speeds on the track means that the smallest error could turn out to be fatal for the car and yourself! Just make sure that you listen to what the instructors say. They’ll let you have plenty of fun with the car, trust me but at the same time they want you to be safe. You’ll also learn a few tips and tricks that will help with your driving on a day to day basis as well.
3- Take Lots of Photos
The first track day is a very important milestone in every petrolhead’s life so make sure you take plenty of photos of the track, the cars and of course of yourself! The above picture is my wallpaper of choice for my phone. It’s been over a month since my first track day and I’m still reveling in the adrenaline high I got from it and this wallpaper makes me smile every time I turn on my phone!
4- But Most of All, Remember to Have Fun!
The first time is always special and I guarantee that you’ll remember this day for the rest of your life so make sure to you enjoy it and live in the moment! Getting to drive extraordinary cars around a great circuit at breakneck speeds doesn’t happen everyday so make sure to make the most of your day there! And if you do get hungry or thirsty, the catering crew will take very good care of you, don’t worry.
