If you’re after a seven-seat SUV that trades on presence, tech and a surprising amount of creature comforts without the premium price-tag, the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max stakes a loud claim. It’s a modern family hauler that looks the part, packs useful hardware for daily life, and (with my 2.0‑litre turbo and an intelligent AWD option) promises genuine driveability.

Exterior – confident, contemporary and distinct

The Tiggo 8 Pro Max has been styled to read bigger and bolder than its price might suggest. From up front the diamond-shaped grille and sharp LED treatment give it a contemporary face that’s more assertive than anonymous mid‑sizers, while a signature taillight treatment helps it remain recognisable from the rear, an important trait in a market crowded with crossover silhouettes.

The overall proportions are those of a modern large SUV, 4,720 mm long with a tidy 2,710 mm wheelbase, which translates to a road presence that feels substantial without being gargantuan. 

Wheels and trim levels push the visual story further, Urban and Elite grades ride on 18‑inch alloys whereas the Ultimate AWD gets 19‑inch wheels, plus the panoramic sunroof reserved for the top spec that instantly lifts the cabin’s feel at a glance.

Spacious, thoughtfully detailed, family friendly

While on the matter of the cabin, stepping inside reveals where the Tiggo 8 Pro Max is designed to score. The cabin layout leans into comfort and perceived quality,  diamond‑stitched synthetic leather, ambient lighting and N95‑level air quality management are features that punch above the expected value level and make the car feel like a proper family retreat rather than a barebones people‑mover.

Third-row accommodation for seven is genuinely usable for kids and shorter trips; Chery quotes 117 litres of luggage space with all seven seats upright and up to 739 litres with the third row folded (to the roof), which is a practical progression for weekend family life. There’s also a sensible approach to everyday usability, electric tailgate, retractable cargo cover on higher grades, and fold-flat space when you need to carry bikes or prams. 

Dual screens and modern conveniences

Where the Tiggo 8 Pro Max really undercuts rivals at the price point is its spec sheet for tech. Dual 12.3‑inch LCD screens sit atop the dash and provide a modern digital cockpit layout for instrumentation and infotainment, while a Hello Chery voice assistant and wireless Apple/Android support make daily use easier. An integrated dashcam (Elite and Ultimate) and a 50W wireless charging pad further lean into convenience. 

The Ultimate grade increases the luxury with a 10‑speaker Sony audio system and additional interior frills like fragrance system and illuminated door sills. These are items buyers now expect in the mainstream space, and Chery’s inclusion of them is a strong selling point.

Safety and driver assist – comprehensive and competitive

ANCAP‑level safety credentials are important for family buyers and Chery highlights a 5‑star ANCAP rating for the Tiggo 8 Pro Max, backed up by an array of airbags (10 in total) and an extensive list of driver assistance features. The car’s suite includes lane departure warning and prevention, adaptive cruise and integrated cruise assist, autonomous emergency braking, blind‑spot detection and 360‑degree parking camera systems, a spec level that aligns well with much more expensive rivals and is genuinely useful for everyday city and motorway driving. Chery also adds driver monitoring and traffic jam assist, which helps reduce fatigue during commutes.

Powertrain – torque and a smooth dual-clutch

Under the bonnet the Tiggo 8 Pro Max uses a 2.0‑litre GDI turbocharged petrol engine producing 180 kW and a healthy 375 Nm of torque from 1,750–4,000 rpm. That torque figure is the headline, it gives the Tiggo strong mid‑range shove, useful for overtaking, carrying full loads or towing light family trailers. Drive is managed through a 7‑speed dual‑clutch transmission (DCT), which is typically capable of brisk shifts and efficient operation when calibrated well. My Ultimate model came with an intelligent AWD system and additional off‑road drive modes (Snow, Mud, Offroad) for confidence in poor weather or rougher surfaces.

The fuel consumption figures quoted are competitive for a naturally aspirated family crossover of this weight and size, Chery lists 8.1 L/100 km for Urban and Elite, with the Ultimate AWD at 8.7 L/100 km, reasonable numbers given the performance on offer and the extra mass of an AWD system. However, even with just 1 or 2 passengers, I found the efficiency not ideal, with the Tiggo displaying figures that ventured into the early double digits. Blame it on my heavy right foot I guess.

Driving dynamics – planted, predictable, commuter‑friendly

On paper the Tiggo 8 Pro Max’s combination of torque, DCT and available AWD should make for a composed, confidence‑inspiring drive, and in many ways it does. The transmission and turbo engine pairing lend themselves to relaxed cruising and strong mid‑range performance, which is what family drivers primarily want, effortless progress and adequate overtaking ability on the open road. Chery’s 3 drive modes (Eco, Normal, Sport) let you tune throttle response and transmission behaviour to suit traffic or spirited runs; the AWD model adds off‑road modes for slippery surfaces or light tracks.

The ride is more comfort than razor‑sharp handling (this is a people‑mover first and foremost) with suspension compliance tuned to absorb bumps and provide a stable platform for seven occupants. Overall the Tiggo feels composed and secure at motorway speeds and forgiving in urban pothole‑ridden roads. Yes there are the usual ADAS beeps, but Chery has managed to dull the dings a little – phew.

The Tiggo 8 Pro Max’s strength is a well‑rounded value proposition, premium touches inside, advanced driver assistance, roomy seven‑seat practicality and a punchy turbo engine, all at a price that undercuts many established rivals. Pricing starts from $39,990 for the Urban and $44,990 for the Ultimate (both excluding on‑road costs), which positions Chery as an aggressive value alternative in the large family SUV segment. Those who prioritise equipment per dollar and cabin space will find it compelling; those wanting the last word in refinement or dealer support may still prefer longer‑established brands.
