MG4 EV Urban Essence Review – It’s just a genuinely good EV

Sure, when it comes to buying a new car (EV or Traditional), the offer of the latest technology, the longest range and the most futuristic interiors is enticing. But sometimes the most appealing option is the one that simply does what it promises – and that’s the MG4 EV Urban.

In essence (pardon the blatant name usage), it offers something refreshingly straightforward: a practical, affordable electric hatchback that’s enjoyable to drive, efficient to run and easy to live with. And after spending a week behind the wheel, I came away with one overriding thought – this is an EV that feels perfectly suited to everyday New Zealand life.

Sharp looks without trying too hard

Finished in a vibrant bright blue, our test car certainly stood out in the supermarket car park, but the MG4’s styling is more than just a flashy paint colour.

At the front, the MG wears a sleek and aerodynamic face. The LED daytime running lights feature an attractive swooping design, while the headlights themselves have a sharp, angular appearance that gives the little hatchback a surprisingly premium look. There’s a sporty lower bumper featuring mesh-style detailing and side air vents that add a touch of aggression without becoming overbearing.

From the side, the MG4 sits low and purposeful. The blacked-out b-pillars help create a floating roof effect, while the 17-inch alloy wheels fill the arches nicely. Conventional door handles remain, which may sound like a strange thing to celebrate in 2026, but after countless flush-mounted and electrically-operated alternatives, there’s something reassuringly practical about simply grabbing a handle and opening the door, how novel.

Around the back, the design becomes more adventurous. A roof spoiler extends over the rear window, while a full-width LED light bar stretches across the tailgate. The tail-light graphics bear more than a passing resemblance to the Union Jack, something that will undoubtedly divide opinion. Personally, it adds character to an otherwise clean rear-end design.

The boot is accessed via the MG badge, a neat touch reminiscent of certain Volkswagen models. More importantly, it’s surprisingly spacious. Not only is there a useful luggage area, but lifting the floor reveals a substantial amount of additional storage underneath.

Practicality first

The MG4 Urban does a commendable job of balancing affordability with comfort. The seats feature a leather-effect trim that feels more premium than the price tag might suggest, while the electrically-adjustable driver’s seat makes finding a comfortable driving position remarkably easy.

Material quality is largely sensible rather than luxurious. The areas you interact with most frequently are soft and pleasant to touch, while harder plastics appear on the upper dashboard and door tops. Some may criticise this, but it’s important to remember the MG4’s market positioning. The reality is that these harder surfaces are rarely touched during daily driving and help keep the overall purchase price competitive.

There’s enough room for four adults without complaint, while a fifth passenger can squeeze into the middle seat when necessary. For a compact hatchback, it’s impressively accommodating.

Technology that’s mostly intuitive

Inside, the dashboard is dominated by two screens. A compact digital instrument display sits ahead of the driver, while a larger central infotainment screen handles most vehicle functions. The graphics are clean, the menus are reasonably straightforward and the system generally responds quickly to inputs.

The reversing camera deserves particular praise. The image quality is excellent, and the inclusion of a transparent chassis view allows drivers to effectively see what’s beneath the vehicle while manoeuvring. It’s a feature normally found in far more expensive vehicles and proves genuinely useful when navigating tight parking spaces or uneven surfaces.

That said, there are a few quirks. The most unusual is the headlight control system. Rather than using a traditional stalk-mounted switch, lighting functions are controlled through the screen interface. It’s not a deal-breaker, but it feels unnecessarily complicated for something that drivers may need to access quickly.

On a couple of occasions, the infotainment system appeared to hesitate when engaging the reversing camera, although this only occurred when rapidly shifting between functions. Under normal operation it worked perfectly well.

Efficient in the real world

One area where the MG4 truly impresses is efficiency. Its 54kWh LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) Battery has a claimed range of 405km. After a week of urban and suburban driving, the vehicle was still showing 34 percent battery remaining and approximately 137 kilometres of available range.

Even more impressive was the energy consumption figure. During testing, the MG4 averaged just 14.3kWh per 100km, which is an excellent result and highlights just how efficient this platform can be in everyday use AC and lights on.

For many buyers considering their first EV, real-world efficiency matters far more than headline range figures. The MG4 delivers exactly where it counts.

Surprisingly fun behind the wheel

This is where the MG4 genuinely exceeds expectations. The first thing you notice is how light and agile it feels. Around town, it changes direction eagerly and feels compact enough to thread through traffic without stress.

Acceleration is brisk too. While this Urban specification isn’t attempting to challenge high-performance hot hatches, it provides more than enough punch to make city driving enjoyable. Joining motorways, overtaking slower traffic and darting through gaps all happen with effortless EV smoothness. Ok, it’s not the quietest out there at 100km/h, but this is an urban hatch.

The flat-bottom steering wheel adds a subtle sporting flavour, while the chassis itself remains composed through corners.

One-pedal driving is particularly well executed. The regenerative braking system is smooth, predictable and easy to modulate. Within a day or two, I found myself barely touching the brake pedal at all. It quickly becomes second nature and contributes significantly to the relaxed driving experience.

Visibility is generally good. The large exterior mirrors provide an excellent view rearwards, and the rear-view mirror itself is generously sized. The only compromise comes from the rear headrests, which slightly obstruct visibility through the back window.

ADAS that doesn’t drive you mad

Modern safety systems can sometimes feel like overenthusiastic driving instructors, constantly nagging and interrupting. Thankfully, MG has shown some restraint.

The driver assistance systems are present and active, but they’re not overly intrusive. Speed warnings make themselves known with a brief reminder, but they don’t continue endlessly. Lane keeping and other interventions operate in the background without constantly drawing attention to themselves.

It’s a welcome balance that allows the technology to assist rather than annoy.

Tarmac Takeaway

The MG4 EV Urban may not be the most luxurious EV on the market, nor is it the most powerful or technologically groundbreaking. What it is, however, is a remarkably competent electric hatchback that gets the fundamentals right.

It’s practical, efficient, comfortable and genuinely enjoyable to drive. The technology largely works as intended, the range is more than sufficient for everyday use, and the driving experience is far more engaging than many buyers might expect. The MG4 Urban is proof that sometimes being quietly competent is exactly what buyers are looking for.
