Formula E Names Sennheiser as Official Sound Partner

Sound has always been part of motorsport’s appeal, and electric racing has had to work harder to define its own acoustic identity. Formula E’s new partnership with Sennheiser is a direct attempt to shape that identity, and to make the series sound as distinctive as it looks.

The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship has named Sennheiser as its Official Sound Provider under a multi-year agreement. The collaboration centres on integrating Sennheiser’s professional audio equipment and its AMBEO immersive audio technology into Formula E’s broadcast and trackside operations.

What AMBEO Actually Does

AMBEO is Sennheiser’s three-dimensional audio platform, designed to capture, process, and reproduce sound in a way that places the listener inside the environment rather than simply in front of it. For broadcast viewers, the goal is to recreate the sensation of sitting in the grandstands, the spatial depth of a race start, the pitch of an electric drivetrain under acceleration, the ambient noise of a crowd.

That kind of immersive audio has become increasingly common in music and cinema, but its application in live motorsport broadcasting is less established. Formula E is positioning this partnership as a step toward setting a new standard for how electric racing is heard, not just watched.

Beyond the Broadcast

The partnership extends past television and streaming. Sennheiser’s technology will also be deployed in Formula E’s onsite fan zones and VIP hospitality areas, meaning the audio upgrade applies to people attending races in person as well as those watching from home.

Formula E’s Chief Technology Officer described the collaboration as a way to connect audio innovation with practical application, bringing fans closer to the action through natural, three-dimensional sound. Sennheiser’s CEO framed it as an opportunity to rethink the role sound plays in electric racing, noting that strong visuals deserve equally compelling audio.

Timing and Context

The announcement arrives as Formula E prepares to close out its current GEN3 era with a season-ending double-header in London on 15 and 16 August. Nine drivers remain in mathematical title contention heading into those final two races at the ExCeL circuit, the series’ only indoor/outdoor venue.

The GEN4 era follows immediately after, bringing new cars and a fresh technical chapter. Launching a major audio partnership at this precise moment suggests Formula E wants the sensory experience of GEN4 to feel meaningfully different from what came before.

For a championship that has always leaned on its technology credentials, the Sennheiser deal is a logical extension of that identity. Whether immersive audio can genuinely deepen fan engagement (or whether it remains a premium feature most viewers never fully access) is the more interesting question. The ambition, at least, is clear.
