It’s the type of car that quietly aims to tick all the boxes for a small family (which is exactly what many buyers want) even if it rarely excites.

Exterior – safe, familiar, and deliberately anonymous

The Tiggo 7’s styling is instantly familiar, by design rather than coincidence. From certain angles it channels a facelifted Ford; elsewhere you’ll spot echoes of early MG, Hyundai and Nissan shapes. That’s not necessarily a criticism, the Tiggo 7 isn’t trying to be polarising, it’s trying to be inoffensive, to appeal to as many buyers as possible when they wander the showroom.

If you’re after bold lines or dramatic detailing, look elsewhere. If you want something that will blend in, this does the job neatly. Dimensions put it squarely in the compact crossover bracket, 4,500mm long, 1,842mm wide and 1,746mm tall on a 2,670mm wheelbase. Those proportions deliver the interior space expectations buyers want without the visual drama of a halo model. Standard 18-inch wheels suit the package; the overall effect reads as competent and market-appropriate rather than adventurous.

Interior and practicality – a surprise for the money

Step inside and the Tiggo 7 surprises in the best possible way. The cabin is dressed to impress: twin 12.3-inch digital displays form a dominant, modern focal point and a variety of material finishes give the dash an upmarket look at first glance. The layout feels intuitive and family-friendly, Chery has clearly focused on creating an appealing user environment.

Under scrutiny some shortcuts become apparent. Faux trims feel ill-fit for the Tiggo brand’s family-oriented ethos, and certain plastics such as the A-pillar mouldings are flimsy. Some will welcome the cloth seats on ethical or maintenance grounds, others will prefer the synthetic leather option. Still, most surfaces hold up well to everyday use and the overall presentation belies the Tiggo’s pricing ambitions.

Its practicality is strong and five adults should be comfortable and boot space is a respectable 426 litres with all seats in place, expanding to 1,672 litres with the rear seats folded. For family hauls and weekend getaways the Tiggo is more than competent.

Infotainment and tech – big screens, some over-exuberance

The dual 12.3-inch screens are the mid-2020s punctuation point many expect and they lend the cabin a premium, modern feel. Software responsiveness and interface logic appear well considered, and Chery equips the Tiggo 7 with a generous suite of kit as standard, consistent with the brand’s value-led approach.

On the safety and assistance front the Tiggo 7 is well stocked, advanced driver-assist systems (ADAS) are fitted and work to modern expectations. One quirk, the driver-monitoring camera is intrusive and can nag at innocuous driver behaviours, though the systems are switchable if you find them over-zealous. 

Powertrain and economy – modest is being kind

The ICE variant uses the same powertrain that features in the Tiggo 4, a turbocharged 1.5L petrol four-cylinder making 108kW and 210Nm, paired to a six-speed dual-clutch transmission driving the front wheels. Alas, it’s not great in this bigger frame.

Performance is unassuming rather than exciting: 0–100km/h in.. (I lost count), swift enough for daily use (within reason) but not a car that will thrill in straight-line bursts. Fuel consumption is quoted at 6.9 litres/100km, which is acceptable numbers for a petrol-only compact SUV (I recorded 7.5L/100km) but not class-leading.

Driving experience –  comfortable, quiet, and unengaging

Let’s get the powertrain out of the way, I found it somewhat infuriating at low and off the mark speeds. It was clunky and simply struggled,  surprising, since I found it quite the contrary when shrouded in Tiggo 4 skin.

On the move the Tiggo 7 is tuned for comfort and serenity rather than involvement. A degree of suspension compliance flattens rougher surfaces and the car’s “Silent Glass” double-glazing helps keep cruising refined and quiet. At lower revs the petrol engine is hushed and amiable, which makes for relaxed motorway kms. However, the steering lacks feedback and feel across all drive modes (adjustments change weighting more than character) so the Tiggo never feels particularly communicative. 

Body roll is present thanks to softer springing and the chassis favours understeer if pushed, while the dual-clutch gearbox can be hesitant under some load conditions, especially when overtaking or climbing steep gradients where you want more immediate response. In short, competent, comfortable and safe, but not a driver’s car.

Tarmac Takeaway – Pragmatic, comfortable, and value-packed

The Chery Tiggo 7 ICE is a textbook example of a pragmatic compact SUV, spacious, well-equipped, quiet on the move and priced to win consideration from buyers who prioritise value and practicality over style and sportiness. It won’t impress car enthusiasts seeking engagement (the steering, gearbox and engine are all deliberately tuned for the majority rather than the enthusiast minority) but for families and everyday drivers the Tiggo 7 will do almost everything they ask without fuss.

However, Chery offers this SUV with aggressive pricing and a strong warranty, making the Tiggo 7 a genuine disruptor in markets where buyers are prepared to trade power and a little design charisma for solid value, useful tech and real-world space. It’s a sensible, well-rounded compact SUV, not the most exciting option on the road, but one of the most practical for many people’s lives.
