Outback’s Back – 2026 Subaru Outback & Outback Wilderness First Drive NZ

Subaru’s Outback has long been the unofficial adventure wagon of New Zealand, equally at home outside the local Four Square as it is halfway up a rutted forestry track. Now, with the NZ arrival of the seventh‑generation Outback and the debut of the Outback Wilderness, Subaru has rewritten the brief. Taller, tougher, more technologically advanced and more purposeful, this all‑new generation marks the most significant evolution in the model’s 30‑year Kiwi story.

Subaru has completely redesigned the 2026 Outback from the wheels up, giving it a more traditional SUV silhouette, a shift that immediately makes it feel more assertive on the road. Height and width are increased, the front end is more upright, and character lines have been sharpened to project capability and confidence whether you’re navigating a supermarket carpark or leaving the sealed road behind. Redesigned LED headlights and tail lamps enhance visibility while adding a modern, chiselled look.

The Wilderness variant cranks the visual transformation up several notches. It stands taller and looks tougher, with exclusive exterior cues, bronze accents, a robust water‑repellent exterior finish, unique bumpers, and improved approach and departure angles for genuine off‑road prowess. With ground clearance bumped to a towering 240 mm (higher than any previous Outback) and electronic dampers, Wilderness is instantly distinguishable as Subaru’s most adventure‑ready model ever engineered.

Step inside the 2026 Outback and you’re welcomed into a cleaner, calmer cabin designed to feel like a living room‑like space, comfortable, intuitive, and perfect for long‑haul adventures. Subaru has rethought seating from the structure up, improving lumbar and pelvic support while reducing vibration. It’s a meaningful ergonomic upgrade, especially for Kiwi drivers who spend hours on winding rural roads.

Interior materials are chosen for durability and easy care, aligning with the Outback’s adventurous character. Wilderness takes this further, featuring hydrophobic synthetic leather with an anti‑slip embossed finish,  ideal for muddy tramping packs, wetsuits or ski gear. Embossed Wilderness badging reinforces its identity. While on the ‘embossed’ trail, the Wilderness also gets some fun easter eggs of what cargo it can carry (such as Xmas trees) and how to load dogs.

Practicality also receives major attention. The cargo opening is now 50 mm taller, improving loading ease, while a new multi‑use cargo cover can be neatly stored in the trim pocket when not in use. Door pockets now accommodate 32oz Nalgene bottles, an outdoorsy detail Subaru fans will love. Roof rail load capacity increases to 363 kg static, perfect for rooftop tents and adventure gear. Overall cabin space improves too, with increased headroom for both rows.

Subaru has made a giant leap forward in technology. A new 12.1‑inch horizontal infotainment touchscreen replaces the old vertical layout and now boasts up to 2.5 times faster processing, improved widget layout and enhanced customisation. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across the range.

Next to it sits a 12.3‑inch digital instrument cluster available across all models, offering Classic, Calm and EyeSight viewing modes, plus Map & Projection modes on navigation-equipped variants. Together, these displays elevate the cabin to feel significantly more premium and modern.

Subaru also apparently listened to feedback, key functions like climate control and Auto Vehicle Hold now use physical switches instead of touchscreen-only controls, drastically improving usability on rough terrain or in winter gloves. Audiophiles can spec a Harman Kardon 12‑speaker premium audio system on higher trims for a richer in‑car listening experience.

Safety tech steps up with the latest generation EyeSight Driver Assist system, complete with a new wide‑angle monocular camera to better detect cyclists, pedestrians and complex intersections. A new Emergency Driving Stop System, Acceleration Override Assist, and Active Lane Change Assist (on higher trims) further expand its capability. Vision Assist also improves with a new Panoramic 360° View Monitor and Side View Monitor.

Nine airbags ( including a new far‑side airbag) are now standard, helping support Subaru’s goal of zero fatal accidents in Subaru vehicles by 2030.

Under the bonnet, two direct‑injection Boxer engines are offered, depending on the variant. The standard 2.5‑litre naturally aspirated engine delivers smoother performance with more usable torque and reduced noise. For most Kiwi drivers, this engine will provide ample urge for daily driving and touring.

But it’s the Wilderness model’s exclusive (and more punchier) 2.4‑litre turbocharged Boxer engine that steals the show. With 194 kW and 382 Nm, it offers a meaningful boost over the previous generation turbo and delivers strong, effortless acceleration, especially on steep inclines or loose surfaces. It’s tuned for responsiveness whether you’re overtaking at 100 km/h or crawling up a rocky access trail.

Both engines are matched to Subaru’s enhanced Lineartronic CVT with 8‑speed manual mode. The transmission runs quieter and feels more natural than prior iterations, offering improved responsiveness. Wilderness variants receive a revised final drive ratio calibrated for low‑rev torque and off‑road ability, a difference keen drivers will notice the moment the surface gets rough.

A new dual‑pinion electric power steering system also improves precision and road feel, contributing to a more confident and sure‑footed driving experience.

Driving Experience – Balanced, Quiet and Built for Real Roads

With the NZ launch based at the outstanding Kauri Bay, we got to experience both rural road and ‘farmland’ driving. Outback’s core strength has always been capability, and Subaru has pushed that reputation even further. Symmetrical All‑Wheel Drive now integrates an improved Active Torque Split for more precise power delivery on varying surfaces. Minimum ground clearance for naturally aspirated models rises to 220 mm (up from 213 mm) enhancing gravel road capability. X‑Mode remains standard across the range.

As mentioned before, Wilderness elevates things again. With exclusive suspension tuning, 240 mm ground clearance and electronically controlled dampers linked with X‑Mode, it stays composed even when the surface doesn’t. On rutted farm tracks or washboard gravel, Wilderness makes terrain that would stop most SUVs feel like a warm-up lap. Approach and departure angle improvements add real-world off-road value too. We climbed acute hills with aplomb (well I managed some steeper climbs after a couple of attempts) and descended them too, with the Outback’s clever hill descent mode that simply matches your throttle speed.

Cabin quietness is significantly improved, with better insulation, aerodynamics and body rigidity reducing wind, road and vibration noise,  an upgrade you’ll appreciate on long weekend trips.

Tarmac Takeaway – The Most Capable Outback Ever, and Wilderness Sets a New Benchmark

The 2026 Subaru Outback range represents the biggest step forward in the model’s long history. Subaru has successfully combined rugged functionality, modern design, advanced technology and real off-road capability in a package that feels uniquely tuned for New Zealand life.

For drivers wanting a versatile, comfortable and safe family SUV with strong daily usability and genuine gravel-road prowess, the standard Outback remains one of the best all-rounders on the market.

For those who want more (more ground clearance, more torque, more capability, and more adventure straight out of the box) the Outback Wilderness is simply in a league of its own. It’s the most capable Subaru ever produced and arguably one of the toughest adventure wagons NZ has ever seen.

Both models reaffirm Subaru’s place in the Kiwi outdoors, and with the Wilderness now in the lineup, there’s officially no excuse not to take the road less travelled.
