Just when you thought the city car game couldn’t get any cuter or cleverer, Honda drops a bombshell. The company has officially launched the all-new N-ONE e: in Japan, an all-electric version of its much-loved, retro-styled Kei car. Drawing its charming looks and a “man maximum, machine minimum” design philosophy from the legendary Honda N360, this little EV is designed to be your perfect “e:Daily Partner”. It promises to inject a bit of fun and zero-emission energy into your daily grind.
The All-Important Numbers – Range and Charging
Let’s get the big EV questions out of the way first. Honda is claiming a very respectable WLTC range of 295 kilometres (183 miles) on a single charge. For a car designed primarily for urban environments, that’s more than enough to handle the daily commute, school run, and grocery shopping for an entire week for most people. Honda is positioning it as a “standard EV” you can trust for everyday use, giving drivers peace of mind.
When it’s time to plug in, the stress levels are kept low. A standard Level 2 charge (over 6kW) will take the battery from low to full in about 4.5 hours – perfect for an overnight top-up. If you’re in a hurry, the higher-spec e: L model comes with standard fast charging, juicing the battery to 80% in approximately 30 minutes. To ensure this performance remains consistent, Honda has equipped the N-ONE e: with a battery cooling and heating system, so extreme summer or winter temperatures won’t drastically affect your range or charging times.

Clever by Design – More Than Just a Pretty Face
The N-ONE e: might be small, but it’s packed with clever thinking. The M/M concept (man maximum, machine minimum) means that Honda’s engineers have maximised cabin space while shrinking the mechanical bits. A thin, high-capacity battery is mounted under the floor, which not only gives the car a low centre of gravity but also ensures a surprisingly spacious cabin that can comfortably seat four adults.
The practicality doesn’t stop there. The N-ONE e: inherits the versatile seating of its petrol sibling, featuring a “dive-down” mechanism that folds the rear seats completely flat and a “tip-up” feature to accommodate tall items. Ergonomics have also been improved, with the steering wheel moved 37mm closer to the driver for a more natural posture and enhanced control. And in a masterstroke of practical design, the charging port is located on the front grille, so you don’t have to worry about which way you park at the charger.
The Drive – Silent, Smooth, and Simple
An electric powertrain naturally brings quiet, smooth acceleration, but Honda has refined the driving performance for the cut and thrust of city life. The N-ONE e: is engineered for easy handling, a tight turning radius for U-turns and tricky parking, and exceptional stability thanks to that low-mounted battery.
The standout feature, however, is the “Single Pedal Control”. A first for a Honda mini-passenger car, this one-pedal driving system allows you to accelerate, decelerate, and even come to a complete stop using only the accelerator pedal. It dramatically reduces the need to constantly switch between pedals in stop-start traffic, making urban driving a far more comfortable and relaxed experience.
Tech, Safety, and Sustainability
The N-ONE e: is available in two flavours. The standard ‘e: G’ is a simple, functional model with Bluetooth audio but no main display, creating a clean, open-feeling dash with excellent visibility. The higher-grade ‘e: L’ adds a 9-inch Honda CONNECT display, 14-inch alloy wheels, and fast charging as standard.
Crucially, every N-ONE e: comes standard with the full Honda SENSING suite of advanced safety features. This includes everything from Collision Mitigation Braking to Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow. The model even debuts Traffic Jam Assist for the mini-vehicle lineup, taking the strain out of congestion.

Furthermore, the car can be your personal power station. Using the Honda Power Supply Connector, it can provide up to 1,500W of AC power for appliances on a camping trip, or even act as a backup power source for your home during an outage thanks to V2H (vehicle-to-home) connectivity. It’s a feature that adds a whole new layer of utility. To top it off, Honda is flexing its green credentials by using recycled materials from old bumpers for the front grille and plant-derived bio-resins for parts of the interior.
The Tarmac Takeaway
The Honda N-ONE e: looks to be an absolute triumph of packaging, technology, and thoughtful design. It takes a beloved, characterful car and gives it a future-proof electric heart without compromising on the practicality and charm that made it great in the first place. With a solid real-world range, clever features like one-pedal driving and V2H capability, and a full suite of safety tech, it’s the complete city car package. While sales have only just begun in Japan, we can only cross our fingers and hope that this little slice of electric brilliance eventually finds its way to shores beyond its homeland.
