Landmark Ferrari Racing Cars at Pebble Beach Auctions in August

Some auction catalogues demand a second look. Gooding Christie’s has announced a group of postwar Italian competition cars for its 22nd annual Pebble Beach Auctions that, taken together, reads less like a sale list and more like a roll call of motorsport history.

The event takes place on 14 and 15 August 2025 at the Parc du Concours in Pebble Beach, California, as the official auction of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Public previews run from 12 August.

The Headliner: Ferrari’s First Mid-Engine Prototype

Leading the sale is the 1963 Ferrari 250 P, chassis 0810, estimated at $15,000,000–$20,000,000. This is the first-ever Ferrari “P” car — the original mid-engine, V-12 sports-racing prototype — and its significance extends well beyond the numbers.

Scuderia Ferrari retained 0810 for the full 1963 season. It finished second overall at the 12 Hours of Sebring with Willy Mairesse, Lorenzo Bandini, and Nino Vaccarella, then third overall at Le Mans with Mike Parkes and Umberto Maglioli. It subsequently raced with Luigi Chinetti’s North American Racing Team and Scuderia Bear through 1965, appearing at Sebring, Le Mans, Bridgehampton, Mosport, and Nassau.

The car has been part of a single private collection since 1988. Its appearance at auction is, by any reasonable measure, a rare event.

Two More Ferraris of Exceptional Rarity

The 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Competizione, chassis 2701 GT, carries an estimate of $8,000,000–$10,000,000. It is one of only 20 so-called SEFAC “Hot Rod” Berlinettas built — the most focused development of the 250 GT SWB. At the 1961 Le Mans test weekend, Mike Parkes recorded the fastest GT time of the session in this car. Its subsequent history includes the 1967 Targa Florio, the Tour Auto, Goodwood Revival, and Le Mans Classic.

Also offered is the 1966 Ferrari Dino 206 S Berlinetta, chassis 014, estimated at $3,500,000–$5,000,000. It is the last of just three Berlinetta-bodied examples among 18 Dino 206 S cars built in total. Bodied by Piero Drogo and delivered new to N.A.R.T., it raced at Le Mans three times, twice at Sebring, and at Daytona and Watkins Glen. Drivers included Pedro Rodríguez, Nino Vaccarella, and Jean Guichet. Crucially, it retains its matching-numbers engine in original Lucas fuel-injected specification.

Further Highlights From the Catalogue

Beyond the Ferrari trio, the sale includes two further significant competition cars. The 1959 Maserati Tipo 61 Birdcage, chassis 2452, is estimated at $3,000,000–$4,000,000. It was the first production Tipo 61 built and one of only 17 examples in total, raced on the West Coast by drivers including Ken Miles and Jim Hall.

A 1952 Ferrari 225 Sport Tuboscocca Spider, chassis 0194 ET, rounds out the headline group at an estimate of $2,000,000–$3,000,000. One of six built on the advanced Tuboscocca chassis with Michelotti-designed Vignale coachwork, it was a Scuderia Ferrari entry in the 1952 Mille Miglia and retains its matching-numbers engine.

What This Sale Represents

The combined upper estimate for these five cars alone approaches $40 million. More striking than the figures, though, is the concentration of provenance: Le Mans, Sebring, Daytona, the Targa Florio, and the Mille Miglia all appear across these five chassis.
