Tesla Opens First Semi Megacharger Station in California

Tesla has taken a significant step toward making its electric Semi truck commercially viable at scale, opening the first dedicated Megacharger station in Bloomington, east of Los Angeles. The site offers six drive-thru charging stalls, each capable of delivering up to 1.2 MW, a charging rate designed specifically for the Semi’s large battery packs.

A Network Built Around the Routes That Matter

Tesla’s charging team confirmed the opening via a post on X, and the Tesla Semi account followed up with a clear signal of intent: this is the first of many. Max Zegher, who leads Tesla’s North American charging deployments, described the Bloomington site as the beginning of a broader Megacharger network.

Zegher noted that the build-out will prioritise the most important Semi routes and depot locations first. He also recommended that fleet operators install their own Megachargers or Basechargers at their depots where possible, to make the most efficient use of their trucks.

That’s a practical point worth noting. Public charging infrastructure for heavy trucks is still sparse, and fleets running tight schedules will likely need on-site charging regardless of how quickly the public network grows.

What the Semi Can Actually Do

The Tesla Semi is available in two variants. The Standard Range carries a 548 kWh battery pack and offers over 500 km of range. The Long Range variant steps up to an 822 kWh pack, delivering more than 800 km of range under a 37-tonne load, figures that begin to address the range anxiety that has historically made fleet operators cautious about electric trucks.

Both variants use Tesla’s 4680 cells with NMCA chemistry and are compatible with the 1.2 MW Megacharger stalls. Tesla is producing the Semi at its Nevada Gigafactory, which has a stated capacity of up to 50,000 trucks per year.

California as the Proving Ground

The choice of California for the first Megacharger site is no accident. The state has become a focal point for electric truck adoption, supported by a generous voucher system and local incentives that have attracted multiple operators and manufacturers to the region.

With high-volume production now under way and the first public charging infrastructure in place, Tesla is moving the Semi from a long-running promise into something that fleet operators can actually plan around. Whether the Megacharger network expands quickly enough to match production ambitions remains the key question, but the Bloomington station at least marks a concrete start.
