New Zealand continues to punch above its weight in the global automotive market, and Audi’s latest offering, the all-new Audi S5, is set to further solidify the brand’s dominance. As the number one market per capita for Audi Sport models, Kiwis have a clear passion for performance vehicles. Now, with the introduction of the new S5, that passion is about to be reignited.

At a special event hosted by Giltrap Audi, the S5 was presented as not just another performance car but as a significant step forward for the brand. It marks a shift in Audi’s lineup, with the former A4 Avant giving way to the new A5 nameplate. This change aligns with Audi’s revised naming conventions, where model numbers correlate to vehicle size, and it signifies a move towards an even more premium experience.

The new Audi S5, it’s wider, longer, and more aggressive when compared to its predecessor, embodying Audi’s signature sporty aesthetics. The front grille sits lower, enhancing the car’s dynamic stance, while the steeply raked rear window elongates the overall look. Audi’s design DNA is unmistakable here, with signature ‘shoulder blisters’ adding a muscular presence to the car’s profile.

One of the most visually striking updates is the lighting technology, same as what we recently experienced in the new Q6 etron. The OLED taillights are interactive, adapting to driving conditions, while the headlights feature multiple signature designs, both deeply customisable. Small details like flush door handles contribute to the sleek, aerodynamic silhouette.
Inside, the S5 continues to impress with a driver-focused human-centric cockpit. The panoramic curved display wraps around the driver, and Audi’s latest ambient interaction light strip adds a futuristic touch, providing visual alerts for blind spots and hazards. Passengers, meanwhile, are treated to a dedicated entertainment screen — which can be used for watching YouTube or even karaoke on long road trips.

Materials have also been updated. The soft Alcantara-style dashboard wrap and the new Vanadium Dark Metal finishes offer an elegant alternative to traditional gloss black trim. The optional Aras Red interior adds a bold contrast for those seeking a sportier touch, especially with the diamond quilted seats.
Under the hood, the S5 is powered by a 270 kW turbocharged V6, now enhanced with mild hybrid technology. Audi’s legendary Quattro all-wheel drive remains a key feature, complemented by a sport differential for even sharper handling. The adaptive suspension has been fine-tuned, sitting lower for a more planted feel while still offering excellent ride comfort. Audi Drive Select enables drivers to tailor the vehicle’s dynamics to their preference, ensuring a balance between spirited performance and daily usability.

And to get a first hand look at the new S5 Avant, Audi New Zealand hosted us for a reveal of the car. We got to learn more about the model, see it in different colours and option combinations and take them for a day out, including a convoy drive to Piha.

The drive started going up North to Albany, where we could use the motorway drive to set everything up and acclimatise with the car. When in the Efficient mode, the S5 handles the stop and go in electric fashion, making for silent and comfortable day-to-day driving. After we got to the Waitakeres, things got quite bendy. When we were not being held back by the constant roadworks, we got to put the S5 through its paces a bit more. From low speeds and engine loads, the electric motor is quick to fill the gap until the turbo spools up. Once there, the crescendo of the power and noise make for an engaging experience in Dynamic mode. The car feels planted and there is barely any roll during quick changes in trajectory.

We took the less busy route, meaning we had to constantly ignore the navigation system’s efforts to have us driving the boring path to Piha. This meant that a very welcome Audi feature was only used on the way back: the 20 speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system features two speakers inside of each front headrest, and you can use them to either immerse yourself in your beats, or have navigation information whispered to you, without distracting others. After some calibration, I drove back almost convincing myself and my companion I knew the way back.

Once in Piha, we were greeted with amazing views, incredible food, and good chats with other like minded people aggregating thoughts around the car. Its dynamism was one of the talking points of the day, and even full-on Audi guys were happy with this being the latest addition to the S lineup.

The S models from Audi have always been a great way to get a perfect balance between performance and usability with stealthy kerb appeal, and the new S5 is no exception. It is spacious, comfortable, competent and full of tricks.

With its striking design, cutting-edge technology, and exhilarating yet approachable performance, the new Audi S5 represents a bold step forward. For New Zealand, a country that has long embraced Audi Sport models, this new chapter promises to deliver all that, in lovely Avant form, no less. The no compromise station wagon is back with a new name and new proportions, but the same charm as ever. Thanks, Audi, for having us!
