Nissan has added a Special Edition to the 2027 Pathfinder line-up to mark the nameplate’s 40th year, with burgundy trim inspired by the 1987 original and a higher towing rating.
Forty years is a long time for any nameplate to survive, especially in a segment as crowded as the family SUV. Nissan is marking the occasion with a new Pathfinder Special Edition for 2027. Its design nods to the original, and it also brings some useful hardware.
The 2027 Pathfinder arrives at US dealerships in November from US$39,990. The Special Edition starts at US$47,390 with front-wheel drive, or US$49,390 with Nissan’s Intelligent AWD.

A Burgundy Callback to 1987
The Pathfinder first appeared as a 1987 model. Back then, it was a compact two-door SUV. Five generations later, it has grown into a three-row family hauler, and the anniversary model looks back to where it started.
Inside, the Special Edition gets two-tone upholstery in black and burgundy, using Nissan’s TailorFit material. It refers to the burgundy cloth seats of the first-generation car. Outside, red accents include the PATHFINDER lettering across the liftgate. That’s a subtle tribute rather than a full retro costume, which is probably the right call for a family SUV.
More Than a Trim Package
Heritage aside, the Special Edition adds a fair amount of equipment. Buyers get:
- Black 20-inch alloy wheels
- A panoramic moonroof
- Second-row captain’s chairs
- Rear door sunshades
- A 12-speaker Bose audio system
- A tow hitch receiver
That last item matters most. The hitch raises towing capacity from the standard 3,500 lb (about 1,590kg) to 6,000 lb (about 2,720kg). Nissan calls that figure class-leading. For families with a boat or caravan, it’s the most practical part of the package.
Familiar Mechanicals
Under the bonnet, nothing changes. The 3.5-litre V6 produces 284hp (about 212kW) and 259 lb-ft (about 351Nm). It drives through a nine-speed automatic. This is a proven, naturally aspirated set-up rather than anything new or electrified.
Every 2027 Pathfinder also gets a 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Seating is for eight, or seven with captain’s chairs. Cargo space ranges from 16.6 cubic feet behind the third row to 80.5 cubic feet with both rear rows folded. The more off-road-focused Rock Creek grade remains in the range, with all-terrain tyres and off-road-tuned suspension.

Riding a Sales Wave
The timing suits Nissan. The Pathfinder had its best-ever sales quarter in the second quarter of 2026. Nissan then sold its two millionth Pathfinder in September.
The SUV also holds a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating. Nissan has assembled it in Smyrna, Tennessee, since 2004.
Anniversary editions often amount to badges and a paint colour. This one at least pairs its burgundy seats with a towing upgrade that owners will actually use. And for a nameplate that started life as a rugged two-door, a stronger tow rating seems a fitting way to mark the occasion.
