Omega unveils a new Moonwatch edition with real meteorites

Omega has expanded its Speedmaster lineup with a captivating new addition: the Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite. Featuring a dial made from a slice of genuine meteorite, this timepiece adds an astronomical layer to an already iconic collection. Omega’s signature blend of space heritage and horological excellence is on full display here, with a moonphase display which shows the phases of the moon in both hemispheres simultaneously.

At first glance, the meteorite dial steals the show with its distinctive Widmanstätten patterns, a natural crystalline structure formed over millions of years. These patterns ensure that no two watches are exactly alike, giving each piece a sense of individuality. Adding to its allure is the moonphase display, a complication that has become a hallmark of the Speedmaster family.

The Moonphase Meteorite comes housed in a 43mm stainless steel case with a matching steel bracelet, emphasizing durability and classic design. The tachymeter bezel, a staple of chronographs, nods to the Speedmaster’s racing roots. A sapphire crystal on both the front and caseback provides a clear view of the watch’s intricate details.

Powering the Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite is the Calibre 9914, a new hand wound Co-Axial Master Chronometer movement that boasts METAS certification. This ensures top-notch accuracy, reliability, and a resistance to magnetic fields of 15,000 Gauss. With a dual-barrel design, the movement provides an impressive 60-hour power reserve.

The moonphase display, located at 6 o’clock, is a work of art in itself. Omega’s use of a micro-structured metallic crystal moon disc ensures the depiction of the lunar surface is both accurate and detailed, complementing the meteorite dial’s celestial theme. The stars on display depict the exact layout on the sky the night the Apollo 11 mission touched down on the lunar surface back in 1969. A subtle detail only for the watch nerds in us.

I have a soft spot for meteorite dials, but it is undeniable they have been slightly overdone recently. Omega, of all brands, gets a pass with its real and unquestionable space connection, especially in the Speedmaster lineup. With this release, they continue to honor this legacy while offering something fresh for collectors. Priced at $17,100 USD (aprox. $30,000 NZD), the Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite sits firmly in the luxury segment, appealing to those who appreciate both mechanical sophistication and a connection to the cosmos.
