At a time when we thought emission had regulations meant saying goodbye to the five cylinder powertrain, Cupra has pulled a move that no one expected. They have brought it back from the dead effectively with the Formentor VZ5. Limited to just 4,000 units worldwide, this engine will add a different sort of appeal to the brand’s sporty crossover SUV.
Described as being able to deliver “an emotionally charged driving experience”, this VZ5 marks the first occasion where the vehicle is available in both left and right hand drive markets. It will be powered by a 2.5L five-cylinder engine, putting out 287kW and 480Nm through a 7 speed DSG gearbox, now doesn’t that sound like a familiar powertrain combination?
The VZ5 will be separated from the other Formentors thanks to unique badging, diagonal copper tips along with wider wheel arches and unique diffusers. A few specific colour options are available as well, five in particular including Midnight Black, Dark Void, Magnetic Tech Matt, Century Bronze Matt and Enceladus Grey. While on the inside, CUPBucket seats will be fitted as standard for the VZ5.
True to its roots, the Formentor VZ5 has been designed and developed in Barcelona where it will also be made with production set for a start in early 2026.
