Rather than following the traditional meaning of being ‘put on ice’, McLaren was a tad more literal when applying this phrase to its upcoming W1 hypercar. It quite literally took prototypes of the vehicle to one of the world’s coldest regions, the Arctic Circle.

Normally a secretive affair, McLaren proudly shared photos of the W1’s cold weather testing

The purpose of this was to test the W1’s “systems and capabilities in sub-zero conditions”. Engineers measured all aspects of the car’s performance on surfaces with little to no grip to ensure that the W1 can put down its mammoth 1340Nm of torque anywhere. Remember that it has roughly 1257 bhp as well so traction is pretty important to say the least.

W1 also features hybrid power so it was paramount that McLaren tested the capabilities of its battery and gearbox in freezing conditions. The engine is an all new ‘MHP-V8’ unit too which warranted extreme testing as well.
