Prefect but not perfect – Mazda CX-30 SP25 review

In some of the more posher schools, although it may be across all levels of academia, there are certain students that act as role models to other students, aka prefects. Prefects are not perfect, but are expected to do the right thing, look the part (often with badges), and stand out amongst their peers, and that’s exactly what came to mind when I reviewed the Mazda CX-30 SP25. Let me explain.

The CX-30 is a Kiwi fave amongst the Mazda line-up. Sitting on the Mazda3 platform, it’s a true crossover that drives like a car and acts like a small SUV. It does its job very well, but goes about its business without any fuss or drama. Mazda has now decided to give it a promotion, and added an SP25 badge, and to me that makes it perfect, or is that prefect?

Mazda’s SP badge has actually been around for decades and has appeared (in 20 or 25) on such iconic models as the 323, Astina and Mazda3.  It stands for sports inspired performance and also sophistication so it elevates the nameplate that it’s allocated to, and that’s exactly what it’s done with this CX-30

The SP25 sits at the top of Mazda’s 2WD CX-30 lineup, boasting a 2.5L engine and flaunting blacked-out accents, from the grille to the wheels, which in my review model’s case, contracted well against the ceramic white body paint. However, I feel that it would be even better against the optional soul red crystal, which in my opinion accentuates every curve and lightplay that the compact Mazda SUV has to offer.

The SP25’s allure continues with gloss black wheels, black privacy glass around the sides and rear, a rooftop spoiler and distinctive badging.

As I mentioned before, under the bonnet lies a naturally aspirated 2.5L SkyActiv-G engine, producing 139kW of power and 252Nm of torque, which is mated to a six-speed gearbox. As for its efficiency, the CX-30 SP25 maintains a modest 7.3 L per 100 km consumption, emitting around 171 g/km. All these figures sound, and are really good, however, I feel that if they added a turbo to the powertrain it would further elevate this model, making the prefect, perfect.

Inside the cabin, the CX-30 SP25 continues with its SP sportiness, with subtle red stitching tastefully used across the dashboard and seats. The sports seats themselves come in a cloth fabric that exudes comfort, with solid bolsters to keep you supported.

The cabin is Mazda modern and uncluttered and practicality reigns supreme with ample storage, 430L of luggage space in the rear, USB-C ports, and Mazda’s signature infotainment controls, a tactile blend of functionality and style.

On the road, the CX-30 SP25 offers an almost ‘expected’ refined driving experience, with their Jinba Ittai mantra ever present. While not a track missile, the CX-30 excels in everyday driving scenarios, meaning that it’s more than happy to take you to the store or do the school run, yet should you be in a playful mood, a flick into sport holds the revs up high and allows you to be a little bit naughty – what would the headmaster say?

Over the years the Mazda SP badge has been used as a sort of one below the MPS or Mazda speed, so it’s not hot but warmer than lukewarm. The CX-30 SP25 seems to have upheld that tradition, with a blacked out look that invites a second glance and a powertrain that elevates the pulse.

It does what’s expected in terms of performance and it’s looks makes it stand out amongst its peers – prefect!
