Our media drive of BMW’s Neue Klasse iX3 might have involved a beautiful afternoon in Byron Bay, but it didn’t start there. Instead, it began with a 3:00am alarm in New Zealand. And while the driving impressions are embargoed for a little while longer, my impressions of the place they chose for it are not.
My day started in Auckland well before sunrise, making my way to the airport at 3AM for a flight to Sydney before connecting north to Ballina. From there, the BMW team kindly welcomed us and drove to Crystalbrook Byron, a luxury rainforest resort tucked away just outside Byron Bay. And within minutes of arriving, it became obvious why BMW had chosen this location.
The Neue Klasse represents way more than a new electric SUV. It marks a complete rethink of BMW’s future, built around sustainability, innovation and responsible luxury. Crystalbrook Byron mirrors those same principles, making it much more than simply a convenient venue for a media launch. Same as with the iX3, the resort proudly embraces sustainable practices throughout its operation, from responsible water management, renewable materials, and environmentally conscious hospitality. You see nods to it everywhere, from the recycled key fob to the reclaimed water fountains.
Before even checking into my room, I wandered through the resort’s timber boardwalk that winds through tranquil wetlands surrounded by native Australian vegetation. The path leads guests into the natural ecosystem, where birds, wildlife and towering trees create a sense of calm you don’t find in most luxury destinations.
It’s a gentle introduction to Byron Bay itself. You’re only minutes from the town, yet it feels worlds away. There is a beach walk, but my time here didn’t allow for that, unfortunately – I’ve been to the Bay before and had an incredible time. Instead of traffic and crowds, you’re immersed in nature, with botanical gardens, meditation walks and rainforest trails encouraging you to slow down and disconnect.
Even the accommodation itself continues that theme. The villas and suites are grouped and named after native species such as Acacia, Cypress, River Gum and Water Lily. Reaching each one involves a leisurely walk along landscaped pathways, reinforcing the feeling that you’re retreating into your own private corner of the rainforest.
My suite, located in the Everglades section of the resort, created a great first impression with its generous proportions. The layout is nothing short of genius: a full kitchenette includes a cooktop, sink, dishwasher and coffee facilities, making the room suitable for both an overnight or a longer stay. You also get a dining and work table, while a lounge with a comfortable sofa acts as a secondary area to unwind after a day behind the wheel. I say secondary because at the very end of the room, you get a conservatory with private views to the bush, from where I’m writing this piece.
The bathroom continues the theme of openness, with ventilation slats, oversized openings and an adjoining walk-in wardrobe that was overkill for a solo traveler, but a feature my traveling companion would have appreciated. But the standout design feature is something surprisingly simple.
The bedroom itself manages to be private, separated by translucent sliding doors. It creates enough separation for restful sleep while still allowing the suite to feel connected as one cohesive living space. Whether you’re relaxing on the sofa watching television or catching up on work before dinner, the layout is very inspired.
BMW explained that Crystalbrook Byron was selected because it aligns closely with the values underpinning the Neue Klasse. The resort’s EarthCheck-certified operations, commitment to eliminating single-use bathroom plastics, climate conscious dining initiatives and partnerships supporting wildlife conservation all reinforce that philosophy of responsible luxury.
Just as importantly, the surrounding roads offer the perfect testing ground. Within a short drive in each direction, you get either rainforest climbs and sweeping coastal roads, with the spectacular hinterland that has made Byron Bay one of Australia’s most celebrated destinations.
The facilities include an infinity pool, a gym and a dry sauna, where I could sneak in a half hour session that made for a good way to refresh and slow down in between flights. Before driving a single kilometre in BMW’s newest model, Crystalbrook Byron set the tone for everything the Neue Klasse is trying to achieve. It is proof that sustainability can be woven into an experience that remains luxurious, comfortable and genuinely memorable. What an inspired pairing!
