Z Energy Opens First Destination Public EV Charging Site at Auckland’s WestCity Shopping Centre

Z Energy has taken a meaningful step beyond the traditional petrol station model, opening its first destination public EV charging site at WestCity Shopping Centre in Waitākere, Auckland. Rather than adding chargers to an existing forecourt, the company has planted its network inside a place people already spend time, which is precisely the point.

What’s on the Ground

The new site features six charging bays equipped with 120kW Kempower fast chargers. Connector options include one CHAdeMO port and five CCS connectors, covering the majority of EVs currently on New Zealand roads. At 120kW, a compatible vehicle can recover a meaningful range in the time it takes to do a grocery run — which is the practical logic underpinning the whole installation.

Z CEO Lindis Jones described the opening as an important milestone in building a public charging network focused on speed, convenience, and reliability. The emphasis on reliability is worth noting; it is a persistent frustration for EV drivers at public sites around the country, and one Z will need to deliver on consistently to build trust.

Beyond the Forecourt

Z’s decision to expand into shopping centre locations reflects a broader shift in how fuel and energy retailers are thinking about their role in transport infrastructure. Destination charging (where drivers top up during an activity rather than making a dedicated stop) is widely regarded as one of the more practical ways to reduce range anxiety.

WestCity Centre Manager Marie Kerr welcomed the addition, noting that integrating EV charging into regular retail visits helps make lower-carbon transport choices part of everyday life rather than an inconvenience. That framing aligns with how most EV adoption advocates argue the transition needs to work: quietly, practically, and without requiring drivers to change their routines dramatically.

What It Means for the Network

This is Z’s first destination site, but the language from the company suggests it will not be the last. Jones spoke of expanding Z’s public EV charging footprint into everyday destinations, pointing toward a broader rollout strategy rather than a single flagship installation.

For Auckland EV drivers in the west of the city, the immediate benefit is straightforward: a fast, accessible charging option in a location they likely visit regularly. For Z, the site is an early test of whether destination charging can become a credible part of its business beyond fuel retail.

Whether the network grows quickly enough to matter will depend on how Z executes from here, but as a first step into destination charging, WestCity is a sensible place to start.
