The Mercedes-AMG G63 is a masterclass in blending tradition with modern performance, all while making an unapologetic style statement. It’s an icon that spans almost 50 years of history, retaining its unmistakable boxy shape and rugged aesthetic while layering on luxury, performance, and a sprinkle of electrification for good measure.
At first glance, the G-Wagon is instantly recognisable with its flat, angular design that feels as fresh today as it did when it first rolled off production lines in 1979. Mercedes hasn’t reinvented the wheel here; instead, they’ve fine-tuned details to perfection. The front is unmistakably AMG, featuring LED headlights, a massive Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star, and the aggressive AMG grille. For those who love branding, the prominent AMG badge reminds everyone that this is no ordinary SUV.

Customisation is a hallmark of the new G63. Buyers have a palette of 28 exterior colors to choose from, including standouts like Green Mango I was driving and the audaciously named Green Hell. The personalisation continues with 23 interior leather combinations, letting you craft a G-Wagon that feels uniquely yours.

Functional additions include a revamped front bumper with three-louver slats that improve airflow into the powerful engine. Wider wheel arches house monstrous 22-inch black alloy wheels, while 241 mm of ground clearance ensures the G63 can comfortably transition from mall speed bumps to mountain trails. Anti-slip side steps not only look rugged but make getting into the high-riding cabin a breeze (admittedly I still need help).
Little details make the G63 even more impressive. Its exhaust setup features quad pipes, not at the back, but placed subtly under the side steps for that signature AMG growl as you cruise by.

On the matter of growl, The Mercedes-AMG G63 boasts a beastly 4.0-litre “hot V” twin-turbocharged V8 engine, handcrafted under AMG’s philosophy of “one man, one engine.” It delivers an impressive 430 kW of power and 850 Nm of torque, paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. Additionally, it now features a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that provides an extra 15 kW of power and 200 Nm of torque when needed, contributing to immense overall output. This combination enables the G63 to achieve a 0–100 km/h time of around 4.5 seconds, a remarkable feat for an SUV with such significant weight and rugged capability.

Inside, the G63 is as lavish as it is practical. Leather dominates the interior, with every surface meticulously designed to offer both comfort and a premium feel. Despite its utilitarian roots, the cabin is undeniably modern, with advanced tech features to match its opulent materials.
For nighttime drama, the mirror caps project ‘G’ logos onto the ground, an unnecessary but utterly delightful flex. The hefty, mechanical feel of the doors nods to the G63’s rugged roots, but modern conveniences like remote-entry functionality bring it decisively into the 21st century. An extra ‘easter-egg’ is a G embossed on the door latch, so if you press hard enough you get a G imprinted on your thumb.

Even its quirks are charming. For instance, while the G63 is about as aerodynamic as a brick (it wasn’t designed to cheat the wind, after all), a small strip has been added to reduce drag ever so slightly. It’s little touches like these that show Mercedes knows what the G-Wagon is, and isn’t trying to change it too much .

The central infotainment system is anchored by Mercedes-Benz’s familiar MBUX interface. It includes standard features like Spotify and Amazon Music, plus extras such as Tidal and preloaded digital games for entertainment. Owners can also enhance the system through the in-car store, which offers additional features like Track Pace, a telemetry-based performance application that tracks lap data, and a built-in dash cam for recording trips. These features make the infotainment system both practical and engaging. And of course it comes with a massage seat function – you’d hate to venture off-road and be stressed.

On that, the “off-road cockpit” is a standout feature that blends utility with modern tech, reminding drivers that the G63 is still a top-tier off-road machine beneath its luxurious exterior. Accessible via dedicated controls and buttons in the centre of the dash, the system provides live data on engine output, pitch and roll for navigating uneven terrain, and suspension monitoring. It also includes various terrain-specific settings and visualisation tools (such as the invisible bonnet) displayed on the screen ahead, particularly useful during steep ascents or descents. This synergizes with off-road features like a low-range gearbox and three locking differentials (front, centre, and rear), empowering the G63 to conquer even demanding off-road conditions, all while riding on 22-inch wheels with road tyres, an impressive feat.

On the tarmac, the G63 is true to its AMG badge: powerful, exhilarating, and loud. Expect blistering acceleration combined with a thunderous, guttural exhaust note, courtesy of those quad pipes. The side-mounted exhausts ensure the G63 doesn’t just accelerate; it announces itself.

Off-road performance is deeply embedded into the DNA of the G-Wagon. Its ladder-frame chassis ensures structural integrity over the roughest terrain, while the 31-degree approach angle (30-degree departure) and generous ground clearance mean no obstacle is too daunting. Whether you’re tackling steep inclines or simply making a statement on city streets, the G63 handles it all with aplomb. And because style is never sacrificed for function, you’ll look great doing it.

The Mercedes-AMG G63 is an unapologetic celebration of what makes the G-Wagon an icon. It hasn’t strayed far from its utilitarian roots, but layers in just enough modern touches, technology, and performance to stay relevant in a rapidly evolving automotive landscape. Whether off-road or on the streets of a luxury neighborhood, the G63 is both a beast and a beauty, making every journey feel like a statement. From its bold design and customisable interior to its unmistakable AMG exhaust note, this is a vehicle that combines heritage with real hedonism.
