Since 2004, Mercedes’ CLS 4-door coupe has developed a strong following of its own. Redefining the category takes a lot and after selling over 450,000 models, it’s safe to say that the CLS has done extremely well. Meet the latest edition, the 2021 Mercedes-AMG CLS53 4MATIC+.
Style has always been a big part of the CLS’ appeal and this new model is no different. With the AMG package comes a new grille, side skirts, splitter and high gloss trim. The AMG Night Package comes fitted as standard for New Zealand models and that includes more high gloss black trim and 20 inch AMG wheels. You also get a rear AMG lip spoiler and some privacy glass.
It’s tech galore on the inside with Mercedes’ latest MBUX system integrated into two 12.3inch screens located side by side on the dashboard. ‘Hey Mercedes’ comes as standard with the audio command vocabulary being expanded to include more features. The Nappa leather finished AMG multifunction steering wheel comes as standard and includes 2 AMG buttons to change driving modes on the fly.
The infotainment screen gives you access to a fantastic 13-speaker Burmester audio system, Digital Radio, a 64 colour ambient lighting system and both Apple CarPlay & Android Auto. Also in typical AMG fashion is the gorgeous black ash open pore wood-trim. A plethora of safety tech comes as standard which includes Mercedes’ PARKTRONIC and PRE-SAFE systems.
The 3 litre turbo straight six produces a mammoth 320kW and 530Nm which takes the CLS53 from 0-100 in 4.5-seconds. That power is delivered to al four wheels through the 4MATIC+ system.
Also available for a limited time is the Mercedes-AMG CLS53 4MATIC+ Limited Edition. One of only 299 produced, this special model includes upgrades like a ‘RACE’ program which encompasses a drift mode. Both the exterior colour scheme and interior tones are unique to the limited edition as well. Not to forget the added extras of carbon fibre, red accents and an indoor car cover.
Prices start from $179,990 for the CLS53 4MATIC+ while the Limited Edition commands a $14,000 price premium over the standard model.
