When it comes to utility and versatility, the JAC T9 ute and JAC N60 EV Truck boldly stake their claim as “JAC of all trades” and, surprisingly, (or maybe not) they might just be right, or at least master of some.
JAC T9: Tough, Tech-Ready, and Towing Its Weight
The JAC T9 ute seeks to blend robust engineering with modern flair, and its design reflects this ethos. Dominated by a bold grill emblazoned with the unmistakable “JAC” badge, the vehicle screams “workhorse.” Black plastic cladding from the front to the wheel arches reinforces its rugged look, emphasising durability. Its 18-inch wheels and tyres promise capability over various terrains, while roof racks (with an 80kg load capacity) and side-steps capture its utilitarian essence. However, those same ‘slippy’ side steps might have work-boot wearers watching their footing to avoid a tumble.

Moving towards the rear, the robust truck bed is a standout feature, capable of accommodating a 1,045kg payload while also fitting standard-size pallets—a jackpot (JACpot) for tradespeople. Combined with its towing capacity of just over three tons, (3.2 to be exact) it positions itself as a formidable partner for laborious jobs, even if not quite class-leading.

Under the hood, the T9 sports a 2L turbocharged diesel engine, producing 125kW of power and a hefty 410Nm of torque, paired with a smooth 8-speed ZF transmission. However, the turbo does demand patience, with some lag off the line, though once it’s rolling, the ute finds its power stride. Inside, the quilted leather-like seats (heated for both driver and front passenger) strike a balance between practicality and comfort, though hard plastic surfaces dominate to ensure the cabin is easy to clean after a day’s work. Adding a touch of modern convenience, the T9 boasts Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a suite of safety features, including lane-keeping assist and forward collision warning.

And, of course, quirky details like the integrated pie warmer/cooler (a feature no one asked for but everyone secretly loves) underscore JAC’s willingness to add a touch of yummy fun.

And then there’s the JAC N60 EV Truck: Silent Power for Urban Commerce
If the T9 sets the stage for versatility, the JAC N60 EV truck ramps it up with an eco-friendly performance and a solid dose of practicality. Unlike the N75 and N90 variants, which require a hefty Class 2 license, the N60 sticks to accessible proportions while offering a gross vehicle weight of six tons. It is powered by a 106kWh battery and a single electric motor producing 65kW, with peaks of 130kW and 415Nm torque. This is no sprinter, but its steady, smooth acceleration and near-silent operation make it ideal for urban settings where emissions and noise are a concern.

The cabin is decidedly functional, with ample storage slots for documents and tools. Its infotainment system, positioned far from the driver, sacrifices convenience for safety, while a reversing camera and regenerative braking further assist with ease of use. While the electric drivetrain adds a futuristic charm, the design remains robust and no-nonsense, built to withstand the rigors of daily work life.

The N60 is not without limitations, though. Engine start-up and other electronics are reportedly slow to respond, adding an unexpected pause to its operation – this may in part be due to its brake/hold function. However, once moving, it handles smoothly, with handy touches like steering-mounted controls and cruise settings making it feel more “carlike” than one might anticipate for a vehicle of its bulk. The eco benefits of zero emissions pair well with its quiet motor, which eliminates the “agricultural” clatter associated with diesel engines.
Mastering Some
Ultimately, both the JAC T9 and N60 reflect JAC’s commitment to providing cost-effective and practical options for both hard labour on worksites and quieter, eco-conscious city driving. While the T9 may not reach the refinement levels of pricier utes, it excels in delivering core functionality wrapped in a reasonable price tag. Meanwhile, the N60 represents a strong move toward sustainable commercial transport, though it might still feel “slow off the mark” for some users – maybe a theme for most EV commercial trucks right now.

Together, these vehicles confirm that JAC isn’t just the JAC of all trades—it might have mastered a few “trucks of its trade” along the way too.
