The Chinese automaker proves hybrid efficiency isn’t just marketing fluff – it’s record-breaking reality

There’s something deeply satisfying about a manufacturer putting its money where its mouth is. In an era where automotive marketing departments throw around claims of efficiency and innovation like confetti at a wedding, Geely Auto has done something genuinely impressive: they’ve backed up the hype with a legitimate Guinness World Record.
Between December 9th and 10th, 2025, the Geely Starray EM-i (known as the EX5 EM-i in some markets) completed the iconic Sydney to Melbourne coastal drive with a fuel consumption figure that’ll make your wallet weep tears of joy, just 3.83 litres per 100 kilometres. To put that in perspective, that’s significantly better than the already impressive NEDC figure of 4.4 L/100km.

The Route That Separates Pretenders from Contenders
This wasn’t some carefully curated, closed-road test with perfect conditions and a tailwind that would make a professional cyclist jealous. The 1,056-kilometre journey from Sydney to Melbourne represents what Geely calls a “metropolitan travel route” – real-world driving that includes coastal plains, undulating hills, urban congestion, and the early summer heat that Australia generously provides.

Under the watchful eye of official Guinness World Records adjudicators, the Starray EM-i navigated the same route that thousands of Australians tackle regularly, proving that this isn’t just laboratory efficiency – it’s the kind of performance you can actually achieve when you’re trying to visit your in-laws or escape to a weekend getaway.
The Technology Behind the Trophy
So what makes the Starray EM-i capable of sipping fuel like a sophisticated wine taster rather than guzzling it like a thirsty tradie on a Friday arvo? The answer lies in Geely’s EM-i Super Hybrid Technology, built on their independently developed GEA architecture.

The system centres around a high-efficiency 1.5-litre internal combustion engine paired with an 11-in-1 E-Drive System. This isn’t just clever marketing jargon – the technology allows the vehicle to seamlessly switch between pure electric, pure engine, and hybrid modes, perfectly balancing low energy consumption with extended range.
Dong Wan, Director of the Energy Control Department from Geely Research Institute, explained the philosophy succinctly: “The primary purpose of this challenge is to demonstrate the practical user benefits of EM-i Super Hybrid technology. We selected this route to test the vehicle’s performance in everyday user scenarios”.
The EM-i Super Hybrid system achieves its impressive efficiency through four key elements: a dedicated high thermal efficiency engine, an extremely efficient hybrid electric drive, intelligent energy management strategies, and an ultra-low drag aerodynamic design.
More Than Just a One-Trick Pony
The 29.8kWh battery pack in the record-breaking vehicle provides enough electric-only range for daily commuting while maintaining the long-distance capability that makes plug-in hybrids so practical. It’s this versatility that has helped the Starray EM-i achieve cumulative global sales of 114,185 units by the end of November 2025.

The model has successfully launched in key international markets including Australia, Italy, Mexico, South Africa, and Indonesia, quickly establishing itself as a serious contender in the plug-in hybrid SUV segment.
The Bigger Picture
Geely Auto Group, founded in 1997 as a subsidiary of Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, has been on a remarkable trajectory. In 2024, the brands under Geely Auto Group management sold over 2.17 million units, marking a 32% year-on-year increase. This isn’t just about one model performing well – it’s indicative of a manufacturer that’s genuinely innovating across its entire portfolio.
With more than 50,000 employees and operations spanning 12 plants and five global R&D centres in locations including Hangzhou, Ningbo, Gothenburg, Coventry, and Frankfurt, Geely has built the infrastructure necessary to compete with established automotive giants.

Tarmac Takeaway
In a world where range anxiety and fuel costs remain genuine concerns for many drivers, the Geely Starray EM-i’s world record achievement represents more than just a marketing win. It’s tangible proof that plug-in hybrid technology, when executed properly, can deliver remarkable real-world efficiency without sacrificing practicality.
Whether this translates into showroom success in Australia remains to be seen, but there’s no denying that Geely has created something genuinely impressive. Sometimes, actions really do speak louder than words – or in this case, 1,056 kilometres speaks louder than any brochure ever could.
