BAIC X55 & B30 NZ Launch and First Drive

When a new automotive brand steps onto New Zealand soil, it rarely arrives quietly. But BAIC, known globally as a major force in Chinese automotive manufacturing, lands with something even more compelling – heritage, capability, and a serious commitment to giving Kiwi buyers more than just another SUV option.

Brand History: Big, Experienced, and Strongly Backed

BAIC (oddly pronounced ‘Bike’) is far from a newcomer. Founded in 1958, the brand has produced more than 30 million vehicles and stands today as the fifth-largest automotive OEM in China. It also appears regularly on the Fortune Global 500 list, ranking 201st and appearing there 145 times. So hardly an unknown, and certainly not a lightweight.

One of the most interesting elements of BAIC’s background is its deep relationship with Mercedes‑Benz. BAIC is the single largest global shareholder in Mercedes-Benz, holding 9.98% ownership. That partnership has been long-standing, strategic, and deeply influential, something that becomes evident once you climb inside their latest vehicles.

BAIC also works with major international suppliers, including Magna, SK, and Huawei, all contributing to drivetrain technology, electronics, and platform quality. These aren’t small names, they’re global-tier partners supplying components to some of the biggest automotive players.

With nine factories and vehicle sales in more than 90 countries, BAIC enters New Zealand with experience, scale, and ambition to match.

Brand Strategy for New Zealand

BAIC’s approach to the Kiwi market is refreshingly straightforward. Rather than start with cheaper entry-level models, they’ve opted to launch with the top-spec variants, the best equipment, best engines, and best overall packages available. It’s a bold move, but a smart one given New Zealand’s preference for well-equipped SUVs offering premium features without luxury-brand pricing.

The brand’s messaging (Made for Real) aims to plant BAIC firmly within real Kiwi lifestyles. Their campaign emphasises local environments, rugged capability, and daily practicality, positioning BAIC vehicles as naturally suited to New Zealand conditions.

Two initial launches target the country’s biggest SUV segment, an urban-focused model (the X55) and one with more all-terrain capability (the B30).

Exterior Design – Urban Slick Meets Adventure Chic

BAIC X55 – Contemporary Urban Style

The X55 is the more city-friendly of the two, although it still carries a hint of sporty attitude. The exterior presents, a split rear wing, quad-tail exhaust tips, chunky 19-inch alloys and a flowing, modern silhouette. Together, these elements give the X55 a handsome and confident look, sporty without being shouty.

BAIC B30 – The Tougher Sibling

The BJ30 leans into BAIC’s off-road heritage. Its design is more assertive, featuring LED stripes and a bold front graphic, an off-road–derived bumper, vertical double‑D taillights, 250 mm of ground clearance and capability-focused proportions. It’s easily distinguishable at night thanks to its LED signature, and the proportions look purpose-built rather than dressed up.

Both models deliver individuality, the X55 for urban edge, the B30 for rugged credibility, all while keeping design clean and modern.

Interior – High on Quality and Surprisingly Premium

Slide into either model, and the interior quality immediately stands out, echoing BAIC’s emphasis on delivering ‘the package’, which includes superior materials, comfort, and design. Both cabins lean toward premium without the premium-brand price tag.

Shared Interior Strengths, full leather-style seating, large digital displays, appealing ambient lighting (64 colours in the X55), Panoramic glass roof in the X55, practical space and generous legroom, thoughtful layout and good visibility. One especially quirky (and memorable) feature is the crystal-diamond ‘interstellar cannon’ control element in the X55, which glows in colour and adds a futuristic vibe to nighttime driving. It’s a conversation piece that feels uniquely BAIC.

The B30 feels slightly more rugged, but still maintains soft-touch materials and a quiet, refined cabin that leans toward the premium end of the mainstream SUV market.

Infotainment & Technology

BAIC isn’t shy about tech, and both SUVs come fully loaded with, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Multiple drive modes and a comprehensive ADAS safety suite. The ambient lighting, digital cluster, and large central infotainment screen come together to create a modern cockpit feel. The system is user-friendly, and BAIC’s global tech partnerships (particularly with Huawei) show in the responsiveness and interface quality.

If anything, the ADAS system errs on the side of caution, perhaps more than necessary on Kiwi back roads, but certainly better than the alternative of being too relaxed.

Powertrain – Stronger Than Expected

X55 – Turbo Punch

The X55’s 1.5‑litre turbo engine sets it apart from rivals. Where many competitors deliver around 110–115 kW, the BAIC pushes almost 140 kW, making this one of the more powerful options in the segment. Torque is plentiful, and paired with a smooth-shifting transmission and independent rear suspension, the X55 strikes a pleasant balance between comfort and punchiness.

B30 – Hybrid Muscle

The B30’s hybrid variants bring serious grunt to the table. Combined output reaches 301 kW and 585 Nm of torque. That’s huge for this class, and translates to effortless acceleration, confident overtaking, and excellent fuel efficiency. It’s rare to see that kind of power married to everyday usability at this price point. BAIC’s ‘Magic Core Hybrid System’ focuses on quiet performance, abundant torque, and fuel savings, all priorities for Kiwi SUV buyers.

Off‑Road Ability – More Than Just Marketing

BAIC’s roots lie heavily in capability, and it shows, particularly in the B30. The brand has long built vehicles for extreme conditions, but with an emphasis on not sacrificing comfort or safety in the process. That philosophy carries into these modern SUVs. B30’s off-road stats worth noting are its 250 mm ground clearance, mud, sand, wading, and snow modes, hill-descent control, 600 mm wading depth, all-terrain tuning and strong approach/departure angles. Alright, so this is more of a soft-roader but it is genuinely capable. And yet, the suspension remains compliant and well‑sorted for daily tarmac duties.

Driving Experience – Smooth, Stable, and Surprisingly Refined

Our test drive was (let’s say) limited, with a trip from Formosa Country Club to the beach and back, but it did give us a taste of what’s on offer.

BAIC B30

On rural roads, the BJ30’s compliant suspension absorbs rough surfaces with ease. Visibility is excellent, seating position can be adjusted to being ‘part of the ride’ rather than sitting ‘on the ride’, and the cabin remains calm and quiet thanks to good insulation and premium-leaning materials. Body roll is well controlled for this taller SUV, and although the ADAS can be a touch cautious, the overall drive is easy and confidence‑inspiring.

BAIC X55

The X55 arguably feels more dynamic. The turbo engine revs happily, delivering eager acceleration that feels livelier than the segment norm. The SUV’s more compact proportions and independent rear suspension help it feel agile and planted. Its cabin is slightly less plush than the B30, but still very good, especially for the price. Both vehicles deliver smooth transmissions, comfortable ride quality, and refined on-road manners.

Tarmac Takeaway – BAIC is Arriving Strong

BAIC enters the New Zealand market with credibility, capability, and confidence. The brand’s mix of global scale, deep Mercedes-Benz ties, strong supplier partnerships, and genuine engineering depth gives it a foundation few new arrivals have.

Both the X55 and B30 feel thoughtfully tailored to Kiwi needs with strong powertrains, well-equipped interiors, feature-rich technology, rugged capability where it counts and competitive pricing. The tagline “Made for Real” feels accurate, these are real SUVs for real-life New Zealanders. From the daily commute to gravel roads and weekend getaways, BAIC’s first local offerings deliver comfort, capability, and value in a modern package that stands out in a crowded market.

Looking forward to the follow up drives.
