Air New Zealand Promises a Cure for the Auckland Koru Lounge Squeeze

If you’re a frequent flyer out of Auckland, you know the pre-flight ritual. It’s a game of musical chairs, but with more briefcases and less music. You hunt for a seat, you hunt for a power outlet, and you hunt for a quiet corner that isn’t already occupied by someone taking a very loud conference call. Well, it seems Air New Zealand has heard our collective, weary sighs. In an email that landed with more welcome fanfare than an on-time regional flight, CEO Greg Foran has announced a plan to completely transform the Auckland International Koru Lounge experience.

And it’s about time. Let’s break down the big news.

The Great Divide: Two Lounges to Rule Them All

Perhaps the most significant news is that the single, often-overflowing space will be split into two distinct lounges. The airline is creating an exclusive haven for its top-tier travellers, Airpoints Elite members and those flying Business Premier. This move will likely be met with quiet applause from the pointy end of the plane. For everyone else holding a golden ticket (Airpoints Gold, Star Alliance Gold, Koru members, Elite Partners, and even Airpoints Silver members) a second, separate lounge will be built. The big question on everyone’s lips: will this second lounge be a spacious retreat, or just the current Koru Club with a new sign and twice the foot traffic? The airline promises “more space, more comfort,” so we’re holding them to that.

More Than Just Seats and Sausage Rolls

Beyond simply adding square footage, the plan includes “thoughtfully designed and dedicated areas” tailored for different needs. Whether you need to fire off a few last-minute emails, properly unwind, or just stare into space and contemplate your travel choices, there will supposedly be a zone for you.

The aesthetic is also getting a major overhaul. Air New Zealand is promising a “bold new design” inspired by the beauty of Aotearoa. Expect rich colours and textures meant to evoke New Zealand’s landscapes, creating a space that feels “warm, welcoming, and distinctly New Zealand”. We’re hoping this means more than just a few new pictures of ferns and a playlist of Six60 on a loop.

Now, The Fine Print… Don’t Hold Your Breath

Before you start dreaming of serene pre-flight bliss, take a deep breath. Construction is planned to begin in early 2026. Yes, you read that right. This glorious future is still a good couple of years away.

During the lengthy construction period, Air New Zealand assures us that we’ll “continue to enjoy lounge access across a mix of spaces, including our current lounge”. What “a mix of spaces” entails is anyone’s guess, perhaps a pop-up in a vacant gate lounge with a velvet rope and a coffee machine? The airline has promised to notify travellers with the details closer to the time.

So, while the artist’s impressions look stunning and the promises are sweet, the reality of a world-class lounge is still on the horizon. Still, this is a massive and welcome step forward. It shows the airline has been listening to feedback and is finally investing in a ground experience that matches its ambitions in the air. We’ll be watching this space, Greg. No pressure.
