The Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung – Big Name, Bigger HP

Pure Irrationality, Maximum Performance

Sometimes the best things in life come from a simple question asked by people who should know better. In this case, AMG’s engineering team asked: “How can we push the CLE even further?” The answer? By completely reimagining what a high-performance coupé could be. Enter the Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung, a car that exists because, as one AMG executive brilliantly put it, “highly rational engineers dreamed of a highly irrational car.” We’re here for it.

The Numbers That Matter

Let’s cut to the chase: 646 horsepower. That’s not a typo or marketing speak, it’s literally what powers this beast. An extensively enhanced AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine churns out 850 Nm of maximum torque across a broad rev range, launching the CLE 646 from 0 to 200 km/h in 11.4 seconds and hitting a top speed of 310 km/h.For context, that’s quicker than you can say “is this legal for public roads?”

The Art of Subtraction (and Widening)

Here’s where it gets clever: instead of just bolting parts onto an existing CLE, AMG stripped it down and rebuilt it from the ground up. The result? Around 170 kilograms of weight reduction through rigorous lightweight construction. And it fundamentally changes how the car behaves.

The body? Widened by 60 millimeters at both front and rear to accommodate an aggressive stance and accommodate wider wheels and tyres. The chassis? Completely redesigned with a purpose-developed steel coil-over suspension system jointly created with KW automotive, featuring four-way adjustable dampers that let you tune this thing to perfection. Carbon fibre appears throughout, on the fenders, bonnet, roof, rear wing, and diffuser, because if you’re going to be this obsessive about performance, you might as well be obsessive about weight too.

Personality Over Horsepower

What truly sets the CLE 646 apart is its uncompromising focus on driving dynamics rather than just raw power. This isn’t a car designed by committee or market research, it’s a car born from engineering passion. The switch from all-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive is telling. It’s a statement: “We trust our engineers more than we trust electronic nannies.” An electronically controlled limited-slip differential handles torque distribution, even supporting controlled drifting when the mood strikes.

Track Ready, Street Legal

The aerodynamics deserve special mention. The front diffuser manually adjusts between Street and Race positions, literally unscrew three fasteners and you’ve got yourself a track-focused machine. In Race mode, the inverted wing shape generates Venturi effect, increasing front-axle downforce for laser-sharp precision at triple-digit speeds. The braking system? AMG Ceramic High-Performance Composite units with 420 x 40mm discs up front and gold-painted calipers because performance enthusiasts appreciate the details. They’re engineered to handle intensive racetrack use without breaking a sweat.

The Visual Statement

The paint scheme alone tells you everything: Mojave Silver Magno on the front, Obsidian Black Magno from the B-pillar back. It’s like the car couldn’t decide whether to blend in or stand out, so it did both. AMG crests on the doors complete the picture, this is bespoke, personalised performance, not mass production.

Tarmac Takeaway

The Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung represents everything that makes modern performance cars thrilling: ungodly power, obsessive engineering attention to detail, and the guts to eliminate features (like all-wheel drive) that most manufacturers would consider essential. This isn’t a car built for everyone. It’s a car built for people who understand that true driving dynamics demand uncompromising vision, and who are willing to live with the consequences.

Limited production only, handcrafted in Affalterbach. Because some dreams really do deserve to become reality.
