SEAT’s colour by numbers

SEAT NZ – As production begins to ramp up at SEAT’s Martorell production facility, Barcelona, Spain, here’s some of the key numbers behind creating the perfect paint job.

SEAT’s Martorell paint facilities can be found in workshops in 2B, 4, and 5 (out of 15). Every new vehicle undergoes a ritual in the paint area for six hours to ensure the best colour and finish.

Every paint job starts in the nine immersion pools, a facility covering more than 51,500m2, with 314 workers and 32 robots. The body is immersion washed in each of the nine pools, alternating between another five sprinkler systems where sealants are applied.

Following this preparation, the vehicle body is put through six different ovens, heated between 45 and 180 degrees Celsius, lasting between 30 minutes and 45 minutes.

Next, the vehicle moves into the sealed paint booths where no dust can get in to ensure a smooth finish.

84 robots use high-pressure spray jets to cover each vehicle in seven layers of paint, totaling 2.5kg. The paint is heated to between 21 and 25 degrees Celsius.

Finally, under an ultra violet light, the vehicle moves through a scanner which, equipped with 28 cameras, takes no fewer than 50,568 photos.

All this combines to ensure a flawless finish to every vehicle that leaves the Martorell production line.
