Potholes top the list of driver’s moans – outranking holiday traffic!

Let’s be frank, the list of things to moan about behind the wheel is longer than a Bank Holiday queue on the M25. For decades, the unholy trinity of driving despair has been traffic, parking wardens, and the soul-crushing realisation that you have to pay road tax. But it seems there’s a new king of the road, a crater-like usurper that has captured our wallets and our conversations – the humble pothole.

According to a new “Under the Bonnet” report from, of all people, Mercedes-Benz Vans, the pothole has officially overtaken all other motoring miseries to become the UK driver’s Public Enemy Number One. The research, designed to celebrate 30 years of the ever-reliable Sprinter van, paints a rather bleak picture of Britain’s crumbling tarmac.

How bleak? Well, the numbers suggest we’ve reached a new level of desperation. A full third (30%) of drivers surveyed said they would genuinely prefer to sit motionless for hours in Bank Holiday traffic than suffer the bone-jarring thud of hitting a pothole. A quarter (24%) would rather find that dreaded yellow plastic packet on their windscreen and take the hit of a costly parking ticket. The list of preferable tortures goes on: 35% would rather do the tedious admin of paying their vehicle tax, 23% would opt for a long journey with screaming children, and an astonishing 22% would rather drive to see their in-laws than risk their suspension on a rogue crater. When a visit to the out-laws seems like the better option, you know things are bad.

This isn’t just about avoiding a jolt and a spilled coffee, either. This is a billion-pound headache. The report highlights that damage from potholes is estimated to have cost UK motorists a staggering £1.7 billion in 2024 alone. That figure is not only more than the £1.2 billion raked in from parking fines annually, but it also marks a jaw-dropping 149% increase from the £684 million cost back in 2014. On a personal level, almost a quarter of drivers who’ve had a run-in with a pothole have forked out up to £500 for repairs.

Perhaps the most telling sign of our times is how this epidemic has seeped into the national psyche. Forget football or the eternal drizzle; potholes are now the number one ice-breaker in conversation for a majority of Brits (59%). It’s become such a hot topic that one in six people admit they’ve been politely asked by a long-suffering partner or friend to please, for the love of God, stop talking about potholes. The community spirit is strong, too, with a quarter of drivers admitting to being in a dedicated WhatsApp group just for warning others about tarmac traps on the daily commute. It’s a phenomenon that reached its cultural peak when Sir Rod Stewart was famously pictured in 2022, high-vis vest and all, filling in holes near his mansion because he was fed up with the damage to his supercars.

So, why is a premium van manufacturer digging into our collective road-related misery? Mercedes-Benz Vans says that while they can’t solve the nation’s infrastructure crisis, they can offer a lifeline. Iain Forsyth, the UK Managing Director, notes that their Service24h roadside assistance programme is designed to give drivers “complete reliability”. It’s a pragmatic approach: if the road is going to fight your van, they’ll at least be in your corner for the recovery, day or night.

While we can all appreciate a good recovery service, it seems the UK’s immediate future involves a lot more swerving, wincing, and passionately debating the size of the chasm that just opened up on Acacia Avenue. The pothole is no longer just a hole in the road; it’s a hole in our pockets and a fixture in our daily lives.
