Personalised Plates – A Highway to Hilarity (and Mild Peril?)

The humble number plate. Once a mere identifier, now a canvas for the witty, the weird, and the downright wince-inducing. Sales of personalised plates have skyrocketed, injecting a cool £276 million into the UK government coffers annually, (and un-reported millions into New Zealand), proving that vehicle owners will pay top dollar to tell the world they love Vimto, or perhaps, that they think you’re a “TW4T5”. Over 1.2 million personalised plates were sold in the UK in 2024, a staggering increase from the 500,000 sold a decade earlier. The trend, it seems, is accelerating faster than a Tesla with a plate boasting its electric superiority – sigh.

While some plates offer a chuckle, others venture into the realm of the passive-aggressive. Forget politely asking your neighbour not to block your driveway; simply slap a creatively misspelled expletive on your bumper. Just mind the DVLA (UK’s NZTA), who, despite their apparent fondness for revenue, have a strict “no swearing” policy. One rogue driver, however, managed to sneak an insult past the censors, demonstrating a level of linguistic ingenuity usually reserved for cryptic crosswords.

But are these vehicular vanity plates worth the price tag, which can range from a modest £50 (or $699 here in NZ) to sums that could buy a decent used car? Opinions, much like the plates themselves, are divided. Some see them as a handy “b***end detector” , while others celebrate the rare gems, like the aforementioned Vimto enthusiast, who proves that even in the wild west of personalised plates, there’s room for good taste.

So, the next time you’re stuck in traffic, entertain yourself by deciphering the cryptic messages on the cars around you. Just be prepared for anything from declarations of electric vehicle evangelism to thinly veiled insults. After all, in the world of personalised plates, nothing is off limits (except maybe actual swearing).
