Nissan’s e-POWER Qashqai leaves range anxiety in the rear-view mirror

Let’s be honest, the romance of the open road is often rudely interrupted by the cold, hard reality of a flashing fuel light and the eye-watering price at the pump. And while electric vehicles promise a silent, guilt-free escape, the dreaded ‘range anxiety’ can turn a scenic drive into a nail-biting hunt for the nearest available charger.

But what if you could have the smooth, instant punch of an EV with the go-anywhere convenience of a petrol car? Nissan seems to think they’ve cracked the code, and to prove it, they sent their Qashqai e-POWER on a little jaunt from one end of the UK to the other on a single tank of fuel.

The mission, should their engineers choose to accept it, was the iconic Land’s End to John O’Groats pilgrimage—a gruelling 837-mile (1,347km) trek that’s the British equivalent of driving from Cape Reinga to Bluff and then some. Over two days and 18 hours of driving, experts from Nissan’s European Technical Centre in Cranfield put the family-friendly crossover to the ultimate real-world test.

So, did they make it? Not only did they complete the entire journey, but they crossed the finish line with a frankly ridiculous 100 miles (160km) of range still left in the tank. They achieved an average fuel economy of 75 MPG, which translates to a miserly 3.76L/100km.To put that into perspective, they’ve one-upped their own record from 2007, when a diesel Qashqai set the benchmark at 67.35 MPG – and the new car did it with a fuel tank that’s 10 litres smaller. That’s not just progress; that’s showing off.

The secret lies in Nissan’s unique e-POWER system. Now, this isn’t your typical hybrid where the engine and motor take turns holding hands to drive the wheels. Instead, the Qashqai e-POWER uses its redesigned 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine for one job and one job only: to act as a power generator for the electric motor. It’s the electric motor that exclusively drives the wheels, giving you that instant torque, silky-smooth acceleration, and whisper-quiet ride of a true EV, but without ever needing to plug it in. Think of it as an electric car that carries its own tiny, highly efficient power station.

As one of the pilots on this epic journey, Vehicle Evaluation Engineer Dean Driver, put it, the drive showcased the powertrain’s strength. “Not only did it deliver a smooth and quiet drive throughout the journey, but we completed over 800 miles with fuel still in the tank, proving just how far this technology has come in combining range with refinement”. It seems Nissan is delivering on its promise of having the “range of a diesel with the feel of an electric”.

With a healthy 140kW of power and 310Nm of torque on tap, the Qashqai e-POWER isn’t just about sipping fuel; it’s about providing a genuinely refined and enjoyable drive. Nissan’s Senior Vice President for R&D, David Moss, says the system was re-engineered to “maximise efficiency, reduce emissions, and enhance driving comfort—all while maintaining diesel-like range”.

Built in the UK and set to hit European markets, this clever crossover offers a compelling solution for those of us who want to dip our toes into the electric world without the full plunge. It’s the perfect answer for anyone whose ideal road trip involves more driving and less frantic searching for a charging station.
