Nissan New Zealand has officially opened expressions of interest for the all-new Y63 Patrol, with the next-generation large SUV scheduled to arrive in local showrooms during the first quarter of 2027. Replacing one of the most recognisable off-road nameplates on the market, and a very special one in our corner of the world, the new Patrol represents the biggest technical leap in the model’s 75-year history. It introduces an entirely new twin-turbocharged V6 powertrain, new suspension technology and a cabin that moves the Patrol higher in the premium SUV segment – and into this decade.
Steve Milette, Managing Director of Nissan Oceania, says the new model builds on the reputation that has made the Patrol a favourite among Kiwi buyers for decades. “For decades the Patrol has been a symbol of go-anywhere capability and trust. The all-new Y63 Patrol honours that heritage while taking a significant leap forward,” he said.
We gotta talk powertrain
Perhaps the biggest headline is found under the bonnet. The naturally aspirated V8 is gone (cue sad music), replaced by a new 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged petrol V6 producing 317kW and 700Nm. That’s an increase of 19kW and a whopping 140Nm over the outgoing model, with Nissan also pointing to improved responsiveness thanks to peak torque arriving earlier in the rev range. The engine is paired with a new nine-speed automatic transmission.
Interestingly, Nissan says the new engine borrows technology from the GT-R, including a scavenger oil pump designed to maintain oil pressure during extreme off-road driving over steep inclines and side slopes. We’ll miss the warm resonance of the 8 cylinders, but technically speaking, it is a big and welcome improvement.
New technology on and off the road
The Y63 Patrol introduces Adaptive Air Suspension for the first time on selected variants, working alongside Nissan’s Intelligent Dynamic Damping system. The suspension can automatically adjust ride height depending on driving conditions. Off-road, it raises the vehicle to improve approach, departure and breakover angles, while at highway speeds it lowers the body to improve aerodynamics, fuel efficiency and stability. It can also lower itself when parked, making entry and loading easier.
Another first for the Patrol is Biometric Cooling. Available on selected grades, the system monitors occupants’ body temperature as they enter the vehicle and automatically adjusts the climate control to create a more comfortable cabin environment.
Premium cabin takes centre stage
Inside, the Patrol receives one of its most significant upgrades yet. Higher spec models feature Nissan’s new Monolith display, combining dual 14.3-inch screens for infotainment and driver information. A HUD also makes its Patrol debut, projecting key driving information directly into the driver’s line of sight.
Comfort has also been prioritised, with massage front seats available for the first time, alongside Nissan’s “Zero Gravity” seating design for both the first and second rows to reduce fatigue on longer journeys. Audiophiles will appreciate another Patrol first: a 12 speaker Klipsch premium sound system. Developed in partnership with Panasonic Automotive, the system uses a 600-watt, 12 channel amplifier and has been specifically tuned for the Patrol to deliver a more immersive listening experience. All these improvements on the inside will make the Patrol much more competitive while still being unapologetically a Patrol.
75 years of legacy
The new model arrives as Nissan celebrates 75 years of the Patrol nameplate. Originally launched in Japan in 1951, the Patrol has earned a reputation as one of the world’s most capable and durable four-wheel drives, finding favour with everyone from remote area workers to families and off-road enthusiasts, hence its Kiwi success. In New Zealand and Australia, it has long been recognised for its towing ability, off-road capability and rugged durability, often competing directly with the Toyota Land Cruiser in the large SUV segment.
Nissan New Zealand has confirmed that customers can now register their interest in the all-new Patrol ahead of its launch. First customer deliveries are expected during the first quarter of 2027, with local pricing, model grades and final specifications to be announced closer to launch. We can’t wait!
