Mahindra Supercharges Innovation with Major Expansion at Research Valley

Mahindra is putting the pedal firmly to the metal in its race toward future mobility, announcing a major expansion of its Advanced Research & Development Centre and testing facilities at the iconic Mahindra Research Valley (MRV) in Chennai. With a fresh investment of approximately ₹196 crore (NZ$36M), this move signals a bold stride forward for Indian engineering, electrification, and next‑gen mobility innovation.

The announcement was made at a high‑profile ground‑breaking ceremony attended by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin and Minister for Industries, Investment Promotions and Commerce, T. R. B. Rajaa, clear proof of the strategic significance MRV holds within India’s growing tech and automotive landscape. Mahindra expects the upgraded facilities to be up and running within this calendar year, injecting new energy into the company’s already formidable R&D pipeline.

What’s driving this acceleration? Capability, lots of it. The investment is aimed squarely at expanding MRV’s ability to develop advanced vehicle platforms, cutting‑edge technologies, and future‑ready mobility solutions. From next-gen electric architectures to sophisticated testing infrastructure, the upgraded centre will enhance Mahindra’s global competitiveness and strengthen its “Make in India” engineering footprint.

The numbers tell a powerful story. Once fully operational, the expanded facility is expected to add around 2,000 new jobs spanning engineering, research, and technical functions, boosting MRV’s workforce beyond its already impressive 5,000‑strong talent pool. Not only does this underline Mahindra’s commitment to nurturing deep technical expertise within India, it reinforces Chennai’s status as a thriving innovation hub, especially for automotive engineering.

R. Velusamy, President of the Automotive Business, captured the moment perfectly, noting that this expansion underscores Mahindra’s long‑term commitment to delivering engineering excellence and creating future‑ready mobility solutions. He credited Tamil Nadu’s robust industrial ecosystem and rich talent base as key enablers in Mahindra’s global innovation journey.

For the uninitiated, Mahindra Research Valley is the beating heart of Mahindra’s engineering ambition. Inaugurated in 2012 by former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, MRV spans 125 acres and stands as the company’s global neural centre for automotive and farm innovation. With a record tally of patents and design registrations, it’s home to thousands of engineers pushing the boundaries of possibility every single day.

This expansion only amplifies MRV’s role as a powerhouse of creativity and invention.

Zooming out, the timing couldn’t be more perfect. The Mahindra Group (already a global leader in farm equipment, utility vehicles, and the world’s largest tractor manufacturer by volume) continues its push toward sustainability and future mobility. With deep roots in sectors like renewable energy, logistics, and IT, Mahindra’s broader mission focuses on ESG leadership, rural prosperity, and improving urban living, an ambition summed up in its “Rise” philosophy.

Here’s what we got up to the last time we went to Mahindra in India..
