From Broken Bones to Breaking Records – Kubica wins Le Mans 24 Hours

A decade after a catastrophic rally crash that nearly ended his life and career, former Formula 1 star Robert Kubica has etched his name into motorsport history once again, conquering the legendary Le Mans 24 Hours. This remarkable victory underlines his skill behind the wheel, and his spirit that refused to be broken.

On Sunday, alongside teammates Yifei Ye and Britain’s Phil Hanson, Kubica steered the #83 AF Corse Ferrari 499P to a hard-fought win in the world’s most prestigious endurance race. This triumph marks Ferrari’s 12th overall victory at Le Mans and carries special significance, as Kubica becomes the first Polish driver to win the iconic event, while Ye becomes the first Chinese victor.

Kubica’s journey to this pinnacle of motorsport has been nothing short of extraordinary. He first burst onto the F1 scene with BMW Sauber, securing a memorable win at the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix and was even on the cusp of a coveted seat with Ferrari. However, his trajectory took a dramatic and life-altering turn in early 2011. A near-fatal crash during a rally event left him with devastating injuries, including 42 broken bones, a partially amputated right forearm, and a staggering loss of three-quarters of his blood volume. Doctors fought to save his life, and he spent months in recovery and grueling rehabilitation. “I arrived at the hospital with one and a half litres of blood, whereas a human body has six or seven,” Kubica recalled in an interview. “The right side of my body was all smashed up… For six or seven months I lost all feeling and I was not moving anything.”

The physical and mental toll was immense, yet Kubica’s determination never wavered. Against all odds, he made an incredible return to Formula 1 in 2019 with Williams, racing alongside a young George Russell. While his F1 comeback was a monumental achievement in itself, he continued to push his limits, venturing into the World Endurance Championship, where he won the title in 2023.

This Le Mans victory elevates Kubica into an elite club. He now stands as one of only two drivers this century to have won both a Formula 1 Grand Prix and the Le Mans 24 Hours, an honor he shares with two-time F1 world champion Fernando Alonso. Alonso also achieved his Le Mans victories during a hiatus from F1.

Robert Kubica’s Le Mans win is more than just another racing trophy; it’s a beacon of inspiration. It’s a story about staring death in the face and not only surviving but returning to the highest echelons of a demanding sport and conquering one of its most formidable challenges. His journey from a hospital bed, relearning to move his fingers, to standing atop the Le Mans podium is a powerful narrative of having the will to win.
