Mitsubishi has confirmed pricing and specifications for its first hybrid Outlander Sport in New Zealand, with dealership arrivals set for December.
Mitsubishi Motors New Zealand has confirmed the new Outlander Sport HEV, the brand’s first hybrid electric vehicle for the local market, will reach dealerships from December. The entry-level XLS 2WD launches at an introductory price of $39,990 plus on-road costs, undercutting many rivals in the small hybrid SUV segment.
The range spans two trims. The XLS opens the line-up at its introductory price, while the higher-specification VRX sits at $46,990 plus on-road costs, or $48,490 for the two-tone version. MMNZ Chief Operating Officer Tony Johnston said the pricing was designed to give buyers an accessible route into an electrified SUV that doesn’t need to be plugged in.
The Outlander Sport uses Mitsubishi’s Generation 2 HEV system, pairing a 1.6-litre MIVEC petrol engine with an 85kW electric motor. The setup automatically shifts between electric and petrol power depending on conditions and battery charge, with regenerative braking topping up the battery on the move.
Mitsubishi quotes combined fuel consumption of 4.0L/100km and CO₂ emissions of 95g/km on the WLTP cycle. Drivers get seven selectable modes, including Normal, Tarmac, Wet, Gravel and Mud settings, plus an EV Priority mode and a Charge mode for replenishing the battery while driving.
At 4,390mm long and 1,810mm wide, with a 2,650mm wheelbase, the Outlander Sport is pitched as an easy city SUV with big interior room. The five seat cabin has a flat rear floor, an eight position reclining rear seatback and 40:20:40 split-folding seats, and boot space that totals 329 litres, plus a further 21 litres under the floor.
Both trims get a panoramic glass roof, 12.3-inch touchscreen, 8-inch digital driver display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone climate control and 18 inch alloy wheels. The VRX adds a Yamaha premium audio system, wireless phone charging, ambient lighting, a 360-degree camera system, a power-adjustable driver’s seat and a hands-free tailgate.
Mitsubishi says the Outlander Sport is the first of three new models due in New Zealand before Christmas, with the ASX VR-e and a new Pajero to follow in the coming weeks.
