Tremors have already begun at Victoria’s legendary Lang Lang Proving Ground. JAC Motors Australia has confirmed that its upcoming Hunter plug‑in hybrid Dual‑Cab 4×4 has completed the first phase of an intensive local engineering program, one designed to make their hybrid ute truly “match‑fit” for Australia’s brutal and varied conditions.

Having wowed crowds at its world premiere during the 2025 Melbourne Motor Show with its bold, muscular stance and standout turbocharged petrol‑electric hybrid powertrain, the JAC Hunter is now proving it has the engineering credentials to back up the swagger. The brand’s commitment? More than 50,000 km of local testing by the time the ute officially launches in mid‑2026.
JAC Motors Australia’s Managing Director, Ahmed Mahmoud, describes this Australian program as the brand’s “most exhaustive and ambitious to date”, a tall claim from a global manufacturer with more than six decades of automotive development behind it. According to Mahmoud, the testing will push both the ute and the engineering teams from China and Australia “to the absolute limit” to ensure that the Hunter arrives as a rugged, value‑driven, and thoroughly Australianised option in the crowded 4×4 dual‑cab market.

Built Tough at Lang Lang
The Hunter’s testing at Lang Lang (long considered the benchmark facility for preparing global vehicles for Australian conditions) saw engineers from JAC partner with specialists from Segula Technologies, an independent firm with deep experience optimising vehicles for both local and global markets. As JAC’s Technical Director, Hongjian Jiang, notes, Lang Lang’s mix of bitumen, dirt, and punishing off‑road circuits makes it an exceptional environment for exposing weaknesses and refining durability, dynamics, and safety systems.
This phase has focused on a lengthy list of systems, including powertrain performance and calibration, towing and load‑carrying ability, 4×4 capability, acceleration and braking, and increasingly critical ADAS functionality. For a plug‑in hybrid dual‑cab ute (still a rarity in the Australian market) getting this combination right is essential.
Segula’s involvement underscores the seriousness of the program. Their engineers have decades of experience shaping vehicles to meet Australia’s famously tough expectations, and JAC says the partnership will significantly influence how the Hunter performs not just here, but potentially in other global markets.

Aussie Engineering That Benefits the World
This local program isn’t just about Australia; it’s helping shape the global Hunter. JAC confirms that the learnings from the Lang Lang and real‑world testing program will be shared with its worldwide engineering teams, highlighting Australia’s strategic importance in the company’s global planning. According to Jiang, Australia’s unique blend of harsh environments, demanding customers, and high‑usage applications makes it “an ideal proving ground”, a proving ground whose influence will extend far beyond its borders.
Hybrid Power With Real‑World Purpose
Under the bonnet (and beneath the tray) the Hunter PHEV is gearing up to offer something genuinely different in the dual‑cab space. Its all‑new plug‑in hybrid system pairs a next‑generation turbocharged petrol engine with two electric motors and a sizeable 31.2 kWh lithium‑iron phosphate battery, bringing a mix of performance and efficiency not commonly found in traditional diesel competitors.
Add to that a 3.3 kW vehicle‑to‑load (V2L) capability, and the Hunter becomes a mobile power station, ideal for running tools on remote work sites or serving as backup power at home during outages. It’s a feature increasingly common in EVs but still rare among utes, positioning the Hunter as a forward‑looking option for trades, adventurers, and fleet operators alike.

Launching Soon With Class‑Leading Support
When it arrives in mid‑2026, the Hunter will join the expanding JAC T9 turbodiesel range that has already begun reshaping the brand’s reputation in Australia as a value‑packed, capability‑focused player. The ute will also be supported by JAC’s All Roads Assurance (JARA) package, which includes a seven‑year unlimited‑kilometre warranty (including commercial use), 24/7 roadside assistance, capped price servicing, and a warranty loan vehicle program, one of the industry’s most generous ownership bundles.
While pricing and final specs will be announced closer to launch, interest is already being captured through JAC’s website and dealer network.
