After much discussion and feedback from their customers as well as dealers, Audi have made the decision to revert on their decision to rename vehicles. The previous plan had even numbered vehicles (2,6,8) as EVs while the ICE powered cars would be odd (1,3,5,7).
As it turned out, this caused much confusion across the globe and Audi have since decided to remedy this by introducing “global standardization and clear orientation” by representing “the size and positioning of each model globally in a unified way.”
Traditionally, vehicle names were chosen based on size and positioning. As such, the A and Q letters will remain to show a distinction between low and high riding models. However, the letters 1 to 8 will remain as they were, independent of the type of powertrain. Instead, Audi was use e-tron, TFSI, e, TFSI or TDI to distinguish between the variants.
The changes will take place with the upcoming Audi A6 where the ICE powered variant will also be named at A6 TFSI rather than an A7 as was previously proposed, this to differentiate it from the A6 e-tron.
