Nine million units sold. Top of the Volkswagen Group sales charts since 2017. The Tiguan has earned its anniversary, and Volkswagen is marking the occasion with a special edition that goes on sale today in Germany, priced from 48,180 euros.

The Tiguan EDITION 20 is based on the Life equipment line and adds R-Line exterior styling, a set of exclusive anniversary details, and a new colour developed specifically for the occasion. It is a measured celebration rather than a radical departure, which, given the model’s track record, seems entirely appropriate.
A New Shade and Familiar Ambition
The most immediately visible change is the new Maple Red metallic paint, created exclusively for the EDITION 20. Volkswagen describes it as giving the Tiguan an elegant appearance, and it does at least distinguish the anniversary car from the standard range at a glance.
Beyond the colour, the R-Line exterior package brings the usual visual upgrades: sportier bumpers, side sill trims, and the general aesthetic sharpening that the R-Line treatment typically delivers. The EDITION 20 does not introduce new mechanical content, all engines available for the Tiguan Life from 110 kW upward can be specified, spanning TSI petrol, TDI diesel, eTSI mild-hybrid, and eHybrid plug-in variants with electric ranges exceeding 100 kilometres.
Twenty Years From Concept to Bestseller
The Tiguan’s origins trace back to the 2006 Los Angeles Auto Show, where Volkswagen presented the Concept Tiguan. The reaction was strong enough to fast-track production, and the first-generation model debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2007.
The name itself came from a readers’ poll run by Auto Bild magazine, a portmanteau of Tiger and Leguan (the German word for iguana). It is the kind of origin story that sounds unlikely, yet here we are, nine million sales later.
Annual production climbed from 120,000 vehicles in 2007 to nearly 911,000 in 2019. The second generation, launched in 2016, brought a larger body, more comfort, and modern driver assistance systems. By 2017, the Tiguan had become the best-selling model across the entire Volkswagen Group, a position it has held ever since.
The current third generation, launched in 2024, adds a redesigned cockpit with a large touchscreen, expanded assistance features, and the full range of modern powertrains. Volkswagen is also developing a new Tiguan R, continuing the performance variant that debuted in 2020 with 235 kW and all-wheel drive.

Global Reach, Local Production
The Tiguan is currently built at three plants: Wolfsburg in Germany, Puebla in Mexico, and Anting in China. It is sold in more than 60 countries, which goes some way to explaining how nine million examples have found owners in under two decades.
Top-of-the-range engines come with 4MOTION all-wheel drive as standard, and the Tiguan can tow up to 2,300 kg, a practical detail that has always been part of its broad appeal.
For a model that began life as a reader-named concept car, the Tiguan has become one of the most commercially significant vehicles in the modern Volkswagen story. The EDITION 20 will not rewrite that story, but it marks the milestone with enough distinction to feel like a genuine tribute rather than a badge exercise.
