When Škoda launched the Karoq back in 2017, the compact SUV segment was already getting crowded. But the Czech automaker had something special in mind: a vehicle that didn’t just meet customer expectations, it exceeded them. Fast-forward to today, and the Karoq is sold in approximately 60 markets worldwide, establishing itself as the third most popular model in Škoda’s impressive SUV lineup. That’s remarkable growth for a model that was originally one of just three SUVs in the brand’s portfolio.
What makes the Karoq so special? It’s the perfect blend of practicality and versatility. The spacious interior accommodates families without compromise, while the extensive standard equipment ensures drivers get exceptional value for their money. Whether customers opt for front-wheel or all-wheel drive configurations, the Karoq adapts to their lifestyle.
The Engine Room of Variety
Under the bonnet, customers enjoy genuine choice. The Karoq comes equipped with multiple powertrain options: 1.0 TSI, 1.4 TSI, 1.5 TSI, and 2.0 TSI petrol engines, plus a robust 2.0 TDI diesel. Power outputs range from 85 to 140 kW, giving drivers options whether they’re commuting through city streets or conquering country roads. Approximately 73% of Karoq buyers select automatic transmissions, while 27% choose the manual option. This split reveals how the vehicle appeals to both efficiency-conscious drivers and those who prefer hands-on control.
A Winner with Critics and Customers
The Karoq hasn’t just captured customer hearts, it’s impressed industry experts too. The compact SUV has collected an impressive array of accolades, including the prestigious Red Dot Award for Product Design and the 2018 Car of the Year title in the Czech Republic. More recently, it snagged the Best Value Family SUV award at the 2023 What Car Awards, confirming its standing as a practical choice for families prioritising value. The vehicle’s largest markets unsurprisingly include Germany, the Czech Republic, and the United Kingdom, regions where practical, well-equipped compact SUVs resonate strongly with buyers.

The Production Powerhouse Behind the Achievement
The Kvasiny plant has been the Karoq’s home since launch, and this facility is no ordinary factory. Located in the Czech Republic, Kvasiny also produces the Octavia and Kodiaq, boasting an impressive annual production capacity exceeding 300,000 vehicles. To put the scale into perspective: in 2025 alone, the Kvasiny plant set a new production record by manufacturing 301,500 Škoda vehicles. That’s the kind of operational excellence that makes achieving the one-million-unit milestone possible.
The plant continues to modernize constantly, with plans underway this year to upgrade its paint shop, further enhancing quality standards and enabling the use of cutting-edge paint materials.
What’s Next for the Karoq?
All good things eventually get refreshed, and the Karoq is no exception. Škoda has already begun work on the next generation, with the unveiling of the Karoq successor planned for the turn of 2027 and 2028. Anticipation is building, what will the next chapter bring?
The Bigger Picture – Škoda’s Strategic Success
The Karoq’s achievement reflects Škoda Auto’s broader success. The company delivered over 1,040,000 vehicles to customers worldwide in 2025, operating three production plants in the Czech Republic plus additional capacity across Spain, Slovakia, Kazakhstan, India, Vietnam, and Ukraine. With approximately 40,000 employees worldwide and active operations in nearly 100 markets, Škoda has established itself as a global automotive force. The company is executing its Next Level Škoda Strategy, aiming to become one of Europe’s top three best-selling brands by decade’s end through a portfolio spanning BEVs, hybrids, and traditional combustion engines.

The Human Element
Perhaps most tellingly, Andreas Dick, responsible for Production and Logistics at Škoda Auto, acknowledged the real driving force behind the milestone: “Since production began in 2017, the Škoda Karoq has become an established part of our portfolio and an especially important model for the Kvasiny plant. Reaching the one-million mark reflects the commitment and teamwork of many people over the years. “This isn’t just about machines and metrics—it’s about dedicated teams and long-standing partnerships that made this achievement possible. The Kvasiny plant, as one of the region’s largest employers, represents the backbone of this success story.
Tarmac Takeaway
The Škoda Karoq’s journey to one million units tells a compelling story: a well-designed, practical compact SUV can thrive in competitive markets when it delivers genuine value and reliability. It’s proof that sometimes, getting the fundamentals right, spacious interiors, strong engines, reliable transmissions, and fair pricing, is exactly what customers want. One million satisfied customers can’t be wrong.
