When “High Mileage” Barely Covers It – This Suzuki Vitara Has Clocked Over 700,000km

There are high-mileage cars… and then there are cars that make you double-check the odometer because surely someone’s added an extra digit by mistake. In the latest example of just how stubbornly durable Suzuki’s compact SUV really is, a UK-owned Suzuki Vitara has just completed a frankly ridiculous 436,500 miles (that’s more than 702,000 kilometres in Kiwi money) in under 10 years.

Yep. Seven hundred thousand kilometres.

And before you ask, no, it wasn’t rebuilt halfway through. In fact, the little Vitara is still running its original 1.6-litre petrol engine, original gearbox and even its original exhaust system. That last bit alone feels almost mythical in automotive terms.

The vehicle belonged to a customer of Suzuki dealer Hilton Suzuki Bedford in the UK, who bought the SUV new in 2017 and then seemingly decided the best way to test reliability was to drive absolutely everywhere.

Europe? Covered.
Daily commuting? Done.
Long-haul road trips? Plenty.

The Vitara simply kept turning up for work.

What makes the story even more impressive is how little actually went wrong over those 700,000-plus kilometres. According to the dealer, the SUV remained faultless throughout its life, with regular servicing being the key ingredient.

Naturally, consumables needed replacing. Brake pads wore out, around 15 sets of tyres were fitted over the years and one driveshaft rubber boot needed renewing. But beyond the expected wear-and-tear items, there were reportedly no major mechanical failures and no oil leaks either.

That’s the kind of ownership story car manufacturers dream about.

The anti-drama SUV

The funny thing about the Vitara is that it has never really chased headlines in the way some rivals do. It’s never tried to be the loudest, flashiest or most overcomplicated SUV on the road. Instead, the Suzuki Vitara has quietly built a reputation for being dependable, economical and refreshingly uncomplicated. The sort of vehicle people buy because they need something trustworthy rather than trendy.

And stories like this reinforce exactly why Suzuki owners tend to become repeat Suzuki owners. Because when a car survives more than 700,000km with its mechanicals largely intact, that’s not luck anymore. That’s engineering consistency.

It also speaks volumes about modern servicing and preventative maintenance. The Vitara was reportedly dealer-serviced every few months, proving once again that looking after your vehicle properly can massively extend its lifespan.

There’s a lesson in there somewhere for anyone who thinks skipping a service is “probably fine.”

Built on trust

Suzuki says this extraordinary mileage milestone further reinforces the brand’s four key product pillars: Tech, Efficiency, Quality and Trust. Now, marketing departments love a good slogan, but in this case the “Trust” bit feels particularly well earned. Because reliability is difficult to fake.

Fancy screens and oversized grilles are easy enough to engineer into a car. Longevity is much harder. Especially when the vehicle spends nearly a decade pounding across highways and crossing international borders like it’s auditioning for an endurance rally.

And perhaps the biggest endorsement of all? The owner has now traded the old Vitara in for a 2024 Vitara Hybrid. That tells you everything.

After all, when a car carries you more than 700,000km without major complaint, you probably don’t spend too long shopping elsewhere.

  1. That is amazing, I bought mine in 2021, Turbo, Vitara, just turned 5 years old with 230,000km.
It has never missed a beat. I’m absolutely stoked, my previous car (not Suzuki) didn’t even make it to 70,000km and had a catastrophic failure in the transmission. I highly recommend Suzuki.

  2. I had the used SX4 as my first car for a number of years before I bought a brand-new S-Cross in 2020. After five years of daily commute to work and occasional road trips (110,000 km), I traded it in for the hybrid model. It’s been to the length and breadth of New Zealand, and I love driving the AWD wherever it takes me. 3 Suzuki cars in the last 10 years, 0 complaint!
