GWM has kicked off 2026 with a major leadership shake‑up for our part of the world, announcing Andrew Gao as the new Managing Director for Australia and New Zealand, a move that signals big things ahead for the fast‑growing brand.

Gao steps into the role after nearly 15 years with GWM, including a decade‑plus embedded in the ANZ market. Having worked across sales, network development, product, and brand, he knows the local buyer (and the brand’s global playbook) inside out. He replaces Charles Zhao, who leaves with strong runs on the board, most notably leading GWM New Zealand to a top‑10 finish in 2025 before heading to Europe for his next assignment.

In true GWM fashion, Gao’s message is all about momentum. He thanked Zhao for laying the groundwork and made it clear that the next chapter is about building an even healthier, more sustainable, and faster‑growing business in ANZ.

GWM’s 2026 roadmap revolves around four pillars that will shape what Kiwis and Aussies see in showrooms – Strengthening the product lineup. Elevating the role of dealers. Boosting aftersales capability. Upping the game on customer experience.

Gao confirmed the brand will continue rolling out locally tuned vehicles, a key priority for buyers in both markets. He also emphasised the importance of giving dealers the tools, systems, and support needed to deliver a top‑tier ownership experience. Alongside that, GWM is investing heavily in parts warehousing and technical training to keep aftersales running smoothly, all aimed at delivering better vehicles and stronger long‑term value for owners.

ANZ remains one of GWM’s most strategically important overseas regions, and Gao is set to lead a bolstered executive team as the brand pushes toward an ambitious goal: becoming one of the top five automotive marques in New Zealand.

GWM closed the announcement by thanking Zhao for his contribution to ANZ’s rapid growth, and giving Gao the nod to carry the torch into the brand’s next phase.
