The new Audi A6 sedan and Q5 SUV now have an additional powertrain option on offer, a V6 turbo diesel! Using MHEV “plus technology”, the German brand were able to reduce carbon emissions while still retaining the expected driving experience. A “powertrain generator”, “belt alternator starter” and “lithium iron phosphate battery” make up three electrified components that allowed Audi to bring this engine back. Now greened than ever!

The combination of the three aforementioned parts meant that partially electrified driving can be deployed in situations like crawling urban traffic or parking, offering a boost of 18kW and 230Nm on starting off. This marks the first time Audi’s three litre V6 TDI engine has seen electrical assistance, the main purpose being improved fuel economy and reduced emissions.
An all new 48V “electrically powered compressor” represents a significant leap forward over the technology used in the previous generation S4, S5 and SQ5, a key benefit being quicker boost buildup for the turbos.

Audi are going one step further as well with the new engine being compatible with ‘HVO fuel or ‘hydrotreated vegetable oil’, the use of which is predicted to reduce the cars’ tailpipe emissions by a whopping 70 to 95 percent! Vehicles that leave the brand’s facilities in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm already have a pre-filled tank of HVO ready to go!
