In a move that solidifies its reputation for relentless innovation, the world’s leading NEV manufacturer has unveiled a world-first, a Super Hybrid system that runs on biofuel. This revolutionary powertrain, capable of using any combination of petrol and ethanol, made its grand debut in Brazil, powering the special edition SONG PRO COP30 off the production line to become BYD’s 14 millionth NEV.

The Secret Sauce – What is this Biofuel Super Hybrid?
At the heart of this new machine is BYD’s acclaimed DM-i (Dual Mode Intelligent) technology. If you’ve been following BYD’s European models like the SEAL U DM-i, you’ll know the concept. It’s a plug-in hybrid system, but not as you know it. It’s engineered to deliver a predominantly electric vehicle driving experience. Most of the time, the wheels are turned by the electric motor, providing that smooth, silent, and instant torque we love. The combustion engine’s primary job is to act as a quiet and efficient power generator for the battery, only kicking in to directly drive the wheels under specific high-load conditions. This approach maximises efficiency and minimises emissions, giving drivers the best of both worlds: electric driving for the daily commute with the long-range convenience of a hybrid for road trips.

The real breakthrough here is the Brazilian twist. A collaborative team of over 100 Chinese and Brazilian engineers spent two years adapting the 1.5-litre engine to run on ethanol, Brazil’s most popular green fuel. This “flex-fuel” capability means the SONG PRO can run on any ratio of petrol and ethanol, tapping directly into Brazil’s significant biofuel infrastructure. It’s a solution specifically designed for the local market, or as BYD founder and CEO Wang Chuanfu put it, a “green and sustainable solution tailor-made for Brazil”.
“Ethanol is one of Brazil’s greatest strategic advantages in the energy transition,” said Tyler LI, President of BYD Brazil. “Incorporating it into our DM-i architecture represents a historic advance… It is a crucial step toward consolidating Brazil as a global leader in sustainable mobility”.

A Presidential Roll-Out and a Global Milestone
The launch was no small affair. The first biofuel-capable SONG PRO rolled off the final-assembly line at BYD’s brand-new factory in Camaçari, Brazil. This very car, a special limited-edition “SONG PRO COP30,” was not just any vehicle; it was officially BYD’s 14 millionth new-energy vehicle produced globally, an unprecedented milestone for any automaker.
To mark the occasion and underscore the company’s commitment to climate action, BYD is donating thirty examples of this special edition to the upcoming United Nations COP30 climate summit, which will be held in Brazil. It’s a powerful symbol of technology serving sustainability.
BYD’s Brazilian Bet Just Got Bigger—A Lot Bigger
The Camaçari factory itself is a testament to BYD’s ambition. Built in a record 15 months, it’s already the largest electric vehicle production facility in Latin America and BYD’s biggest manufacturing plant outside of Asia. The initial plan was impressive enough, with a phased capacity to produce 150,000 and later 300,000 vehicles per year.
However, during a meeting with President Lula, BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu confirmed a massive new investment. The company will now double down, expanding the factory’s planned annual capacity to a staggering 600,000 units. This move signals immense confidence in the Brazilian market and will be a huge boost to the local economy, with the plant already employing over 1,500 people.
Stella Li, BYD Executive Vice President and CEO for the Americas and Europe, commented: “This factory is 100% Brazilian, created so that Brazilians have access to better, more modern, connected, technological, and sustainable cars”.
