Citing limited infrastructure availability, high development costs and lack of purchasing incentives, Stellantis has taken the decision to close its hydrogen development program. Further still, the company’s statement says it is not expecting to see adoption take place before the end of the decade, particularly where light commercial vehicles are concerned.
Stellantis had a range of hydrogen powered Pro-One vehicles ready for launch later this year but as a result of the above, has announced that these will not be put on sale anymore. With carbon emission regulations continuing to tighten in Europe, the group’s focus now shifts fully towards electric and hybrid passenger vehicles as well as light commercial vehicles.
Despite the closure of the program, Stellantis has reiterated that their decision will not affect staffing with the hydrogen department’s R & D being “redirected to other projects.”
