How about a VW Amarok Walkinshaw!

If you thought the ute wars in Australia were fierce before, grab some popcorn—Volkswagen and Walkinshaw are doubling down and barrelling headlong into the “performance ute” Thunderdome with the forthcoming 2026 Amarok Walkinshaw W-Series. With heavy-hitters like the Ford Ranger Raptor and Nissan Navara Pro-4X Warrior already revving loud and proud, what does the new Amarok need to stay relevant—hell, to truly break through—in this wildly competitive market?

Bigger, Badder, But Still a Bit Mysterious

The next-gen Amarok Walkinshaw, teased via shadowy images and tantalizing hints, is expected to hit Australian showrooms in 2026. Details are thin, but we know this: it will build on the success of the prior W580, W580 S, and off-road beast W580 X, promising more variants and greater collaboration between VW and Walkinshaw than ever before.

Stylistically, expect wider wheel arches, a beefy alloy wheel set, a unique grille with an LED light bar, and a sailplane sports bar—less suburban runabout, more “move aside, I’m here to win the campsite cook-off”. But deep down, every true ute fan cares more about what’s lurking under the bonnet.

The Heart of the Beast: Powertrain and Performance

Spoiler alert: if you were crossing your fingers for a Raptor-style Ford twin-turbo petrol V6, put them down gently. The Amarok W-Series will ride with either the 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel (184kW/600Nm) or, for the more daring (and possibly spendy), the 2.3-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol (222kW/452Nm) . No word yet on a power boost, but the streets and bush tracks are calling for “more power, more torque”—and the competitors are listening.

On-road tweaks are expected: further-tuned suspension for urban confidence and country-road composure, a massaged exhaust note to let the engine breathe (and snarl), and a suspension lift to bring the whole thing up to eye level with the alpha utes.

Off-Road Grit and Real Aussie Credentials

Let’s get dirty: serious off-roaders demand real upgrades. Think rock sliders, bash plates, heavy-duty underbody protection, even factory-fitted snorkels for those truly aquatic adventures. The previous W580 X set a high bar with its 40mm suspension lift, twin-tube dampers, and diff breathers.

To go toe-to-toe with the HiLux GR Sport, Isuzu D-Max Blade and the rest, VW needs to ensure even greater off-road flexibility: enhanced traction control, switchable modes, gnarlier all-terrain tyres (the crowd is whispering for 17-inch BFGoodriches), and genuine winch-ready hardware—no more “off-road eye candy,” thank you very much.

A strategic handshake with Aussie aftermarket giants, like ARB, could tip the scales from “good” to “must-have,” integrating accessories and upgrades that bring the Amarok solidly into the world of weekend warriors and serious tourers alike.

The Battle Royale: Making a Splash… or a Bellyflop?

While the Amarok isn’t the sales king in Australia yet, it’s hardly invisible—city streets and outback trails alike have spotted plenty of them, often sporting impressive aftermarket mods. VW and Walkinshaw know they need to hit the sweet spot: elevating performance, offering true off-road credibility, and making the Amarok both a strong statement and a smart, robust choice—all while keeping the numbers right for buyers and bean counters.

Moreover, there’s discussion of making the Walkinshaw W-Series a permanent, evolving fixture—not just a once-off halo car—especially since this time the program launches early in the Amarok’s life cycle, allowing more investment and potentially more variants for road and off-road fans alike.

Will the Amarok Walkinshaw Roar?

VW and Walkinshaw are betting big—fresh design, tuned performance, and real off-road cred. With the right mix of brawn, brains, and bush-ready features, the Amarok Walkinshaw W-Series could finally break out of its niche and go toe-to-toe with the established Aussie legends. The fight is just getting started. And it promises to be one hell of a ride.
