If there’s one thing that gets most car fans’ inner child revving, it’s LEGO. There’s just something magical about opening a fresh set, sorting the pieces, and clicking them together until a pile of bricks transforms into a miniature masterpiece. And now, F1 aficionados have a new quest in front of them: LEGO introduced a new collection of Speed Champions recreating the full grid of the 2025 F1 Season!
For the first time, LEGO is releasing models of all ten Formula 1 teams, which means no matter which team you support, you’ll be able to build a version of their 2025 race car – or all of them. From Ferrari’s latest red rocket to the intricate aerodynamics of the Red Bull RB20 and all others in between, LEGO has again done their magic to make little bricks turn into cars as detailed as possible. And for those of us who love collecting, it means the temptation to buy the whole grid is dangerously real.
The new F1 cars from the Speed Champions lineup (which I already own quite a few, older sets) strike a perfect balance of being compact enough to fit on a shelf but detailed enough to capture the essence of their real-life counterparts. Each one has around 250–270 pieces, making them a satisfying yet not overwhelming build. They’re also reasonably priced (at around NZD $45), which means collecting a few won’t break the bank. Each car includes detailed aerodynamic elements, sponsor decals, and, in true Speed Champions fashion, just the right amount of LEGO creativity to make the build engaging.
LEGO hasn’t just catered to the die-hard collectors with these releases. If you’ve got kids, there’s also a new range of LEGO City sets covering the broader world of Formula 1. Transport trucks, pit lane garages, and team support vehicles help round out the experience. And if you really want to start them young in the hobby, LEGO Duplo is introducing F1-themed cars and characters, complete with a starting grid and podium. They obviously aren’t as detailed as the larger sets, but they’re a great way to get kids excited about both LEGO and motorsport from an early age (like my father did).
So then, fast forward a few decades, and LEGO have sent me a few sets from this collection so that I could start assembling my own starting grid. One day, I had the lovely surprise of cars from Williams, RedBull Racing and AMR, all brands that I have a connection for different reasons, showing up at my doorstep. Time to get clicking!
This time, I also tried using LEGO’s mobile Builder App for the first time, and one time was enough to convince me to get on with the times and not come back. Seeing the steps and being able to move the project in 3D space makes it so helpful, without removing anything from the building experience. The app works incredibly well and I have recommended it to all of my friends that are into LEGO. I had tried the browser extension to play around with virtual bricks many years ago, but mixing virtual and real building is an impressive next step, and the way to go.
Considering these recreate a motorsport category where cars are heavily standardised, I was positively surprised to see how different each build was. The cars not only have their own characteristics, but each set also approaches the building process from a different point, meaning that building them one after the other was still extremely rewarding.
I love that moment of “oooh, I see it!” when what started as a blob of bricks suddenly crosses the line towards becoming the final build. For me, it was when I finished the front clip for each of these cars, and I still had more than halfway to go.
For the last set, I let my wife, a first time LEGO set builder, have a go. She wanted to keep it old school and use the instruction booklet, and only took slightly more time than I did, meaning these sets are approachable even to amateurs, and considering by how much fun she had, a great gateway towards more complex builds – time for that Technic, perhaps?
This is a very exciting LEGO collaboration, especially at a time Formula 1 is enjoying so much attention. Personally, I had loads of fun building these and will have them closeby when I watch this season. Now, the real question is: how sneaky will I have to be to end up with the whole grid?
