Who ya gonna call? Nissan and Foxconn

Following the breakdown of merger talks Nissan have continued to push forward with new product and sponsorship ventures. So how about adding another dimension to the brand’s future. Enter Foxconn, the Taiwanese electronics powerhouse best known for assembling iPhones, which could be Nissan’s phone a friend.

Foxconn: The Smartphone-to-Car Whisperer

Foxconn isn’t your traditional automaker, but that might well be in Nissan’s favour. Beyond assembling the ubiquitous iPhone, Foxconn has been ambitiously plotting its entry into the electric vehicle (EV) market. It has unveiled a suite of EV reference models (think of them as plug-and-play vehicles for automakers to customise and sell under their own brands). This approach mirrors its consumer electronics strategy and has already borne fruit: the Foxtron Model C crossover is thriving under Taiwan’s Luxgen brand.

Nissan to use green steel

When it comes to Nissan, Foxconn’s intent seems clear. While Foxconn chairman Young Liu has publicly downplayed any obsession with owning a stake in Nissan, the allure of the company’s global manufacturing infrastructure and design expertise cannot be understated. Foxconn could leverage this to complement its EV aspirations while potentially shoring up Nissan’s future. After all, Foxconn’s financial muscle (10 times the worth of Nissan) makes it a compelling partner.

A Marriage of Convenience

For Foxconn, Nissan represents both a challenge and an opportunity. It’s a chance to establish itself as the contract manufacturer for automakers worldwide—a strategy already proving successful in the smartphone world. For Nissan, partnership with Foxconn could offer some much-needed stability in its operations and alignment with a juggernaut determined to make its mark on the EV industry. But whether this “friendship” is a long-term proposition or a temporary truce remains to be seen.
