In a move that’s about as surprising as finding sheep in New Zealand, Subaru has finally jumped onto the electrification bandwagon with their first-ever U.S. Forester Hybrid. And boy, have they done it in typical Subaru fashion – by refusing to compromise on their “go-anywhere” DNA.

The 2025 Forester Hybrid isn’t just another pretty face in the increasingly crowded hybrid SUV party. Packing a punchy 194 horses under its eco-friendly bonnet (up from the regular model’s 180), this new green machine combines a clever series-parallel hybrid system with Subaru’s legendary Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. Translation? You can still tackle that muddy farm track while feeling smugly superior about your fuel consumption.

Speaking of fuel economy, here’s something to make your wallet smile: this outdoorsy hybrid delivers up to 40% better fuel efficiency than its petrol-only sibling. With an impressive 581 miles (935Km) of range on a single tank, you could theoretically drive from Auckland to Wellington and back without stopping for a fuel-up – though we wouldn’t recommend skipping those classic Kiwi pie stops.

But what about the gadgets, you ask? Well, Subaru’s thrown in everything but the kitchen sink. The cockpit features a tablet-style 11.6-inch multimedia system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a fancy 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster that makes your mate’s gaming setup look positively prehistoric.

For the fashion-conscious adventurer, there’s an exclusive new Daybreak Blue Pearl paint option, and yes, you can get it with a contrast Crystal Black Silica roof if you’re feeling particularly fancy. They’ve even added HYBRID badges on the fenders, just in case you want to make sure everyone in the Countdown parking lot knows about your eco-credentials.

The best part? This green warrior hasn’t gone soft. With 8.7 inches of ground clearance – more than many other SUVs – and Subaru’s X-MODE with Hill Descent Control, it’s still ready to tackle whatever Mother Nature throws at it.

New Zealand is yet to confirm its arrival (we assume it’ll come) but it hits showrooms in the US in their spring. The Forester Hybrid proves that you can have your pavlova and eat it too – combining proper off-road capability with city-friendly efficiency.
