Mazda has done it again: they crafted an MX-5 so enticing that enthusiasts worldwide are left yearning. Meet the Spirit Racing Roadster 12R, a special edition of the beloved roadster limited to just 200 units and exclusive to Japan. This isn’t just another limited-run Miata with a new badge; it’s a machine honed with motorsport DNA and brimming with purposeful upgrades.

Unfortunately, we don’t have many pictures of it at the moment, but there are plenty of spicy details. At the heart of the 12R is the same 2.0-liter naturally aspirated Skyactiv-G four-cylinder engine, but it’s been given a motorsport-grade makeover. With a unique crankshaft, enhanced cylinder head, bespoke pistons, and a reworked exhaust manifold, the engine now delivers 197 horsepower, a bump of 16 over the standard version.
To ensure the 12R can handle the heat, it’s equipped with an uprated radiator and aerodynamic tweaks that boost high-speed stability. Its forged Rays wheels (a staple of limited editions of the Roadster), inspired by Mazda’s Super Taikyu race cars, provide both strength and lightweight performance, while the sticky tires promise sharp, precise handling.
Inside, the 12R doesn’t shy away from its track-focused intentions. Recaro bucket seats keep you firmly planted, and there’s an option for dealer-fitted four-point harnesses if you’re taking it to the track. For those who crave more flair and sound, a Fujitsubo titanium sport exhaust is also on the menu.
The Spirit Racing 12R is a fitting tribute to Mazda’s racing heritage and the MX-5’s legacy of delivering pure driving joy. While it’s bittersweet that the 12R is limited and exclusive to Japan, its existence is a celebration of the MX-5’s enduring spirit and Mazda’s commitment to its performance roots. For those lucky 200 owners, it’s a dream car that bridges the gap between road and track.
