BMW Group Australia has recently completed a major expansion of its solar panel array at its Melbourne headquarters, increasing the number of solar panels from 200 to an impressive 1,109. This upgrade raises the system’s output to 500kW, capable of generating 600 megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy per year—enough to fully power all 26 on-site electric vehicle (EV) charging bays with renewable energy .
Aligned with the BMW Group’s global sustainability and emissions reduction goals, the initiative supports the fast-growing transition to electric vehicles. The site’s EV charging stations have doubled since 2023, reflecting a surge in EV adoption. Currently, 44 percent of the company’s fleet consists of BMW and MINI battery electric vehicles (BEVs), marking a 33 percent increase from the previous year .
The momentum doesn’t stop with corporate emissions reductions. Customer interest in BEVs continues to climb, with BMW recording 7,000 BEV registrations in 2024, a staggering 163 percent increase compared to 2023. MINI has also seen its electric models nearly double their registrations by November of this year. Together, BEVs now represent 29 percent of the total BMW sales mix in Australia .

Beyond energy efficiency, the headquarters has implemented innovative waste reduction practices. The on-site bistro has eliminated single-use takeaway cups and transitioned to plant-based water bottles that lower carbon emissions by 74 percent. Glass containers now replace other beverage packaging. These efforts align with BMW’s Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle strategy, showcasing how sustainability is being embedded into every aspect of its operations .
BMW Group Australia’s sustainability push extends to its network of dealers nationwide, where eco-friendly practices such as solar installations, water recycling, and EV-ready infrastructure are being embraced. These initiatives reflect the broader ambitions of the BMW Group worldwide, which aims to reduce vehicle lifecycle emissions by at least 40 percent by 2030, compared to 2019 levels .
With robust efforts underway at its headquarters and beyond, BMW Group Australia is leading the charge in sustainable mobility and clean energy while making BEVs an increasingly mainstream choice for consumers.
