History was made as Wellington Phoenix and Auckland FC faced off in New Zealand’s first professional football derby, marking the debut of Auckland FC in the A-League. The fiercely contested match at Sky Stadium ended with Auckland FC clinching a memorable 2-0 victory over their North Island rivals, Wellington Phoenix.
The encounter was an eagerly anticipated event, with fans and players alike excited by the prospect of a regional rivalry for the first time in nearly two decades. Wellington Phoenix, donned in their traditional black and yellow, took to the field against Auckland FC’s white, away kit, promising a tantalising duel.

The match started with Auckland FC showing early dominance. Skipper Hiroki Sakai made his presence felt, causing trouble for the Phoenix defence with a well-directed corner. Auckland’s goalkeeper, Alex Paulsen, was called into action several times, managing to stave off attempts from Wellington’s forwards, particularly around the 20 minute mark, stopping a direct shot inside the box from the Nix’s main assassin Kosta Barbarouses – in fairness, he should have done better.
The first goal of the night came courtesy of a critical error in the Phoenix defence. In the 88th minute, Goalkeeper Josh Oluwayemi, under pressure, attempted a risky pass which was intercepted by Auckland’s Jake Brimmer. Displaying his poise and sharp reflexes, Brimmer capitalised on the mistake, slotting the ball past Oluwayemi to give Auckland FC a 1-0 lead.

As the game reached its boiling point climax, Wellington Phoenix struggled to regain their composure. Auckland’s defence, led by Dan Hall and supported by the energetic Nando Pijnaker, repelled the Phoenix’s attempts to equalise. However, with time running out, Wellington pushed forward, leaving gaps in their defence.
In a swift counterattack, Auckland FC sealed their victory late into stoppage time. Forward Lou Tumi, on his league debut, sprinted into the Phoenix box before delivering a precise cross to Jake Brimmer, who duly converted his second goal of the evening. The Auckland FC fans erupted in celebration, as Brimmer’s brace secured a historic win for the league’s newcomers.
The match concluded with a 2-0 victory for Auckland FC, securing their place in New Zealand football history. Fans of the visiting team celebrated long into the night in Wellington, relishing the sweet taste of derby success.

The Phoenix will need to regroup and assess their strategy moving forward, while Auckland FC can take pride in a spectacular debut that promises an exciting future for the club. The introduction of a new rivalry has breathed fresh life into the A-League, setting the stage for many more thrilling matches to come.
