Tesla’s plant needs too much watering

“From Quantum Cars to Quenching Thirst: Tesla’s Water-Bending Factory Sparks Desert Dreams”

Tesla, the company known for revolutionising vehicles and space exploration, has now embarked on its boldest venture yet, trying to make water flow from dry Texas soil. Twenty miles outside Corpus Christi, where shower timers are used as prizes at football games, Tesla’s new lithium refinery is gearing up to consume as much as 8 million gallons of water per day. That’s right, 8 million gallons, about eight times what the entire town of Robstown uses daily, despite having over 3,800 households.

This isn’t just any plant though. This is CEO Elon Musk’s answer to the global EV battery shortage. The factory aims to secure America’s future in lithium processing, at the slight cost of making locals wonder if water is now considered a luxury good. Musk’s grand plans began modestly, with Tesla estimating a conservative 400,000 gallons daily in 2022. However, this figure has ballooned over time, to 800,000, and now, to a staggering 8 million gallons a day. To put that in perspective, it’s enough water to fill eight football-field-sized swimming pools every day.

The small Texas town of Robstown stands nervously on the sidelines of this hydrological drama. Residents, who already struggle with their semi-arid reality, harbor understandable concerns about sustaining both their lives and the industrial ambitions of the world’s wealthiest man. As uneven negotiations for a water contract continue, South Texas Water Authority and Nueces Water Supply Corp. remain conspicuously silent, leaving unanswered questions about whether such a deal would drain local aquifers, along with the locals’ patience .

For now, the message seems clear: innovation apparently comes with an insatiable thirst. Whether this lithium plant will benefit the global EV market while leaving Robstown high and dry is a question best pondered over a shorter-than-average shower.
